After an extensive closure period of almost two months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Michigan casinos are now commencing their reopening.
The closures resulted in significant financial losses for the state, corporate owners, local communities, tribes, and various other entities, amounting to millions of dollars in revenue.
Despite the closure of the 26 casinos, they continued to positively influence their communities.
After their closure, numerous facilities generously offered their surplus food to nearby food banks. As per our calculations, Michigan casinos collectively contributed approximately 58,150 pounds of food (and the tally continues to rise) to support local organizations.
Below is a list of efforts that Playinmichigan has collected. If you are aware of any additional ones, please email Matt Schoch at [email protected], and we will make sure to include them in our report.
FireKeepers Casino
During the initial phase of the crisis, the Battle Creek casino generously contributed 7 tons of produce to the South Michigan Food Bank and also dedicated their team members to volunteer at the facility.
In addition to their previous contributions, the facilities team at FireKeepers Casino generously provided Bronson Battle Creek Hospital with gloves, face masks, shoe guards, and body suits.
Four Winds Casinos
The esteemed council members of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi, who are responsible for overseeing the operations of Michigan’s three Four Winds Casinos, have been actively engaged in crafting masks.
By Wednesday, the group had almost reached the milestone of creating and distributing 1,400 face masks. These masks were intended to safeguard community members, including employees and patients at Pokagon Health Service.
In addition, the casinos generously contributed 7,450 pounds of food, equivalent to 9 pallets, to support Feeding America, Cultivate Culinary, and various local communities.
Greektown Casino-Hotel
Throughout the crisis, the roof marquee of the Detroit-based Penn National Gaming casino has consistently showcased the message ” #DETROITSTRONG”.
In addition, Greektown Casino-Hotel generously offered complimentary accommodations to Detroit police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical professionals, graciously providing them with two entire floors of the hotel.
Gun Lake Casino
The team members of Gun Lake Casino worked together to gather and transport almost 7 tons of food to various local organizations including Exodus Place, Dégagé Ministries, Feeding America West Michigan, and Hand2Hand.
The operations team of Wayland facility generously contributed wipes, gloves, and hand sanitizer pumps to support law enforcement workers and other individuals in Allegan County.

Moreover, they also donated 350 decks of cards to Grayling Elementary School, facilitating at-home STEM student learning kits.
