Carjacking ring targets Detroit-area casinos’ high-limit players

WXYZ Detroit reported that individuals consisting of two men and one woman specifically targeted players who had won at local casinos in Detroit. After leaving the casino parking lot, the alleged carjackers deliberately collided with the victims. Subsequently, they would proceed to steal not only the victims’ winnings but also their vehicle, as stated by authorities.

During the week of September 22-29, 2017, a series of carjackings primarily took place near the MGM Grand Casino.

In relation to the crimes committed, Kenneth Martez Gardner, Damon Kristopher Washington, and Veronica Sharp were apprehended by the authorities.

According to reports, Sharp allegedly frequented the high roller section to identify successful players, ultimately leaving with substantial amounts of money.

Supposedly, she followed the players to the garage and informed Washington about where they were. Washington then proceeded to the floor, collected Sharp, and joined the players on the roads.

Washington and Sharp have a brief encounter with Gardner, who assumes control and accidentally collides with their vehicle. As stated in a complaint lodged by the victims, Gardner brandished a firearm while they were evaluating the extent of the damage.

He forcefully requested their “phone, wallet, and money.” Gardner then fled the scene in the victim’s car, abandoning the initial car at the location, which had been stolen during a previous carjacking.

All good things must come to an end

A red Dodge Charger registered to Washington was spotted on a surveillance tape on October 1, 2017. The investigators in the case observed it trailing another vehicle as they exited the casino garage.

According to police, a car was seen pulling up next to a work van at a parking lot in a senior-living center. It is alleged that Gardner exited the car and proceeded to take the van without permission.

The Charger was under police surveillance and was spotted near the MGM Grand and Motor City casinos. Similarly, the stolen van was also sighted at Detroit-area casinos around 2 a.m. on October 2nd. Both vehicles were observed driving at a slow pace, entering and exiting parking lots, suggesting they were possibly surveying potential targets.

According to the complaint, the car and van were observed trailing a woman who was driving a 2010 Ford Taurus from Motor City casino. The vehicles were positioned next to each other, and the drivers engaged in a conversation.

As the Taurus drove on, the van persistently trailed behind until it collided with it. Sensing the urgency, the driver of the Taurus pulled over to the side of the Lodge freeway, just as Gardner approached them. Soon after, Michigan State Police responded to the situation, and it is said that Gardner discreetly discarded a firearm beneath the Taurus.

Gardner was apprehended by state troopers, and the stolen gun was eventually located by the police.

Conspiracy to commit carjacking at Detroit-area casinos

An indictment was issued on Oct. 17 for Washington and Gardner, charging them with conspiracy to commit carjacking. The alleged carjackings took place on Sept. 22 involving a 2005 Toyota Sienna, on Sept. 26 involving a 2013 Nissan Sentra, and on Sept. 29 involving a 2017 Chrysler 300.

After a police interview with Garner, where he admitted to having the stolen gun, the indictment was issued. Garner revealed that Washington had given him the gun beforehand. Furthermore, Gardner confessed to intentionally crashing into the Taurus with the motive of robbing the driver once she had stopped.

Washington admitted his guilt to five charges.

  • Stealing a motor vehicle by force or threat
  • The utilization of a firearm while committing a criminal act of violence.
  • Aggravated identity theft can be rewritten as “Identity theft with aggravated circumstances.”
  • Having in one’s possession 15 or more counterfeit authorized access devices.

The reporting does not mention any indictment against Sharp. However, it does provide an account of a co-conspirator interview that describes Sharp’s involvement in the alleged carjacking ring.

According to reports, Sharp received a payment of $1,500 for her assistance in identifying potential targets. Law enforcement officials confirmed Sharp’s connection to Washington and Garnder by examining their cell-phone records, which also indicate her presence near the locations where the crimes took place.
