Golfers and boaters have a reason to celebrate.
However, as anticipated, casinos remain unaware of the identity of masked individuals from Michigan.
Due to the improving conditions related to the COVID-19 pandemic in Michigan, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has decided to extend the stay-at-home order for residents until May 15.
On Friday morning, Whitmer announced the extension of her April 30 order by a couple of weeks. Although she eased certain restrictions, the measures remained unchanged for Michigan casinos.
Golfers, boaters can get back to driving
Despite Michigan experiencing another month of unpleasant weather in April, golfers and boaters were among the most outspoken critics of Whitmer’s restrictive measures.
Mike Sullivan, the producer responsible for Detroit’s esteemed sports radio host Mike Valenti of 97.1 The Ticket, expressed his frustration on Twitter regarding his inability to play golf. He tweeted about it so frequently that one might assume the local golf professionals were persistently taunting him with a three-wood.
At best, those complaints were tone-deaf, considering the state’s coronavirus death rate, which almost reached 3,000 this week.
Perhaps they were successful.
Golf courses open for business
Reservations are currently available for the golf courses at Harris property in the Upper Peninsula, with the scheduled opening date being May 8, as stated by a representative from Island Resort & Casino on Friday morning.
Nevertheless, due to the hotel’s closure, he anticipated that the majority of individuals benefiting from the relaxed regulations would be locals.
According to the order, golfers and boaters were instructed to adhere to “stringent” social-distancing measures, which prohibit riding in golf carts and playing within a six-foot radius of fellow golfers.
Boaters, botanists can resume hobbies
In addition, boaters have the opportunity to enjoy Michigan’s lakes this weekend, as temperatures are expected to climb to the 50s in the Detroit region.
Furthermore, lawn services, garden shops, landscapers, and nurseries have now been included in the list of businesses that are permitted to reopen. Previously, shoppers were prohibited from accessing certain nonessential sections of large stores, including gardening and home improvement supplies.
Nevertheless, Whitmer has mandated the use of masks in indoor public spaces and has gone as far as affirming the authority of businesses to deny service to individuals without masks.
According to Whitmer, no arrests or tickets will be issued for individuals not wearing a mask.
Casinos faced continued closure
The closure of Detroit’s three casinos has been extended until at least May 15, resulting in a total of two months without any bets being placed within their premises.
On March 16, Greektown Casino-Hotel, MGM Grand Detroit, and MotorCity Casino, along with Caesars Windsor across the Detroit River in Canada, all ceased operations.
The occurrence happened subsequent to the introduction of Michigan sports betting on March 11, when MGM and Greektown initiated their sportsbooks.
Since early April, the employees of Detroit’s casinos have been placed on furlough.
Full refunds are being provided by MGM Grand Detroit for hotel reservations that were scheduled until May 21. Guests now have the option to make new bookings for stays at MGM properties, starting from June 1 or any date thereafter.
Michigan’s tribal casinos also closed
By March 22, all 23 tribal casinos in Michigan, which operate independently from Whitmer’s authority, had been shut down.
Several tribal casinos had initially planned to reopen in early April, but as the month progressed, these reopening dates have been continuously delayed.
According to their websites and social media pages, the 12 tribal casinos in the Lower Peninsula have yet to announce any reopening dates.
Most Upper Peninsula casinos set to reopen soon
Island Resort & Casino is the only one among the 11 casinos in the Upper Peninsula that has not yet provided a scheduled reopening date. However, officials have the option to adjust these plans voluntarily in accordance with Whitmer’s extension.
After Whitmer’s announcement, the opening date for the five Kewadin Casinos was rescheduled from May 1 to May 15. The Ojibwa Casinos, on the other hand, have confirmed that they will remain closed until the end of April and potentially even longer, as mentioned in their latest update.
Bay Mills Resort & Casinos have confirmed their closure dates until the end of April. However, Northern Waters Casino Resort in Watersmeet, which was initially planned to reopen on May 1, recently declared that it will not be opening at that scheduled time.
