Matt Stammen emerged as the 2018 MSPT Michigan State Poker Champion on October 14, surpassing 1,271 competitors. His triumph not only earned him a substantial prize of $218,565 but also marked his inaugural significant accomplishment in the world of poker.

The Mid-States Poker Tour holds two annual events at FireKeepers Casino in Battle Creek, Michigan, making it a beloved destination for poker enthusiasts. This year’s Poker Championship further solidified its popularity, as it marked the fourth consecutive event with a staggering prize pool exceeding $1 million.

Stammen spoke to the MSPT staff after the victory, stating that last May’s poker event drew 1,287 entries, making it the largest poker tournament in Michigan history. This year’s Michigan State Poker Championship came close with 1,271 entries.

“I’m overjoyed, words can’t describe it. It’s absolutely incredible. I took a chance and put my money on the line, and it paid off.”

Playing poker in his brother’s shadow

Stammen, the elder sibling, is related to renowned poker player Kevin Stammen. The younger Stammen, who has achieved the prestigious honor of winning a World Series of Poker bracelet, has amassed an impressive sum of over $5.7 million in live tournament earnings. While Kevin dedicates his time to the poker tables, Matt spends most of his days in a warehouse. Stammen holds the position of a shipping manager in Ohio.

In order to avoid being overshadowed by his brother, Stammen confidently seized the spotlight for a change, leaving his younger sibling as a mere spectator. Stammen openly discussed the experience of having his brother by his side, watching from the sidelines.

“He’s a whole 12 years my junior and has been incessantly shouting at me throughout the entire tournament. To put it mildly, he’s been offering me some unsolicited guidance. My sole focus has been on obtaining one of those coveted trophies, as I yearned for it desperately. The monetary reward, on the other hand, is simply an added bonus.”

Instead of taking the customary winner’s walk to Disney World, Stammen is obliged to skip the celebration. Shortly after lifting the trophy, he is on his way to undergo planned knee surgery.

“The weekend couldn’t have gone any better,” Stammen exclaimed. “As a precaution, I requested to reschedule my surgery, and it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I have foot drop, so they will perform a procedure on my knee to release a nerve. I will need to take a leave of absence from work for approximately four to six weeks.”

Michigan represented at the final table

Out of the last 10 players, four were from Michigan. Derek Ritchie, a Michigander, was the first one to be eliminated from the final table. Despite entering the table with a small stack of chips, Ritchie was unable to win the hand with a king-eight against Isaac Kratchman’s pocket tens. As a result, the table was left with only nine players.

Michigan missed out on an opportunity to retain the trophy as Dennis Brady’s pocket threes were outmatched by Stammen’s kings. Kings made another appearance, this time held by Kratchman, effectively eliminating Jason Mangold with his ace-jack.

Frank Lagodich finished in seventh place after his ace-ten couldn’t beat Joey Wideman’s ace-jack. Shortly after, Heinz Schluter from Germany was eliminated. The pace of the game slowed down as the grand prizes came into view. Eventually, Victor Gayheart encountered Kratchman with another pair of pocket queens. Unfortunately, his ace-nine didn’t improve and he ended up in fifth place.

Next to go was Maurice Hawkins, the most renowned player at the final table. Unfortunately, his ace-five couldn’t surpass Wideman’s pocket eights, resulting in a substantial loss of his chips.

The championship comes to an end

A few hands later, the ultimate all-in occurred. Kratchman, who had successfully eliminated three out of the seven players, surprisingly became the next player to exit the tournament. Despite leading on Day 1A, his ace-nine hand fell short against Stammen’s king-jack.

Regrettably, as Kratchman stood by the rail, the prestigious Michigan State Trophy was about to leave the state. It took a total of 234 hands for the final table action and the tournament to conclude. The betting occurred before the flop. Stammen possessed an ace-jack, while Wideman held a ten-nine.

Wideman had a glimmer of hope for a straight following the flop, but unfortunately, it never came to fruition, resulting in him finishing in second place.
