The reopening of Michigan tribal casinos did not guarantee that they were completely safe or free from difficulties.

This week, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to have a significant impact on numerous casinos in Michigan, as evident from the recent surge of news updates.

After being closed this spring due to the coronavirus, all but one of Michigan’s 23 tribal casinos have reopened. These casinos resumed operations prior to the reopening of Detroit’s three commercial casinos last month.

In an effort to recover from the financial setbacks faced during closures this year, numerous tribal casinos are venturing into the realm of sportsbooks, aiming to generate additional revenue streams.

BetAmerica Sportsbook is set to launch at Island Resort & Casino on September 10th, while the William Hill retail sportsbook at Turtle Creek Casino in Traverse City and a sportsbook at Odawa Casino in Petoskey are also expected to open shortly.

Three Little River Casino visitors tested positive

On Wednesday, Little River Casino Resort made an announcement stating that three individuals who had recently visited the premises were later confirmed to have tested positive.

According to the Manistee casino, the individuals visited the casino on three separate occasions – Friday, Saturday, and Tuesday. Their duration of stay was approximately eight hours or slightly longer.

Despite not explicitly stating that the individuals were employees, the notification indicated:

  • In order to ensure the safety of everyone, team members who have tested positive for a certain condition must undergo a self-quarantine period lasting at least 14 days. Additionally, they should remain free of any symptoms for 24 hours before they can resume their normal activities.
  • Once contact tracing identifies team members who have been in close contact, they are promptly notified and instructed to self-quarantine. These individuals must refrain from coming to the property until they receive a negative test result.

On Friday, the individuals spent their time at Little River from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The following day, on Saturday, they were there from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Finally, on Tuesday, they visited from 6:20 a.m. to 2:40 p.m.

Little River banned certain face coverings

The face-covering requirements of the Manistee casino were updated last week.

Bandanas, gaiters, and masks with valves are no longer acceptable, announced Little River.

As per the notice, these specific face coverings enable unfiltered, exhaled air and respiratory droplets to escape with greater ease.

Additionally, Turtle Creek in northern Michigan implemented its own update in response to the coronavirus.

Starting from Monday, the casino has implemented a smoking ban indoors, which was already enforced at its sister casino, Leelanau Sands in Peshawbestown.

Northern Waters Casino shut down for over a week

Last month, Northern Waters Casino Resort in Watersmeet, situated across the Mackinac Bridge, temporarily shut down for slightly over a week due to a surge in COVID-19 cases near the Wisconsin border.

In the eastern U.P. this week, yet another closure due to COVID turned out to be a false alarm.

Bay Mills Casino initially stated in a social media post that table games would be temporarily closed, but this post has since been deleted. However, Bay Mills Indian Community Chairman Bryan Newland clarified in an email to Playinmichigan that there was a miscommunication within their internal communications.

According to Newland, there was no confirmed case at the casino.

In June, Bay Mills Casino was reopened by the BMIC, while its sister casino, Kings Club Casino, remains closed due to concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
