Online poker players in Michigan have had the option to choose from two platforms for a little over three weeks. BetMGM Poker MI was launched on March 22, a few months after PokerStars MI, giving players in both the upper and lower peninsulas another online poker destination.
Despite PokerStars MI’s early advantage, BetMGM Poker MI has made progress but has not yet caught up. Nevertheless, the new site has achieved some notable successes in Sunday events and its inaugural $100,000 guaranteed tournament.
Starting this Sunday, the BetMGM Online Series will take place on BetMGM Poker Michigan, marking the site’s first major tournament series. The event will run from April 18th to April 25th.
Sunday BetMGM Poker tournament fields steadily growing
BetMGM Gaming Communications Manager Anthony Mallamaci revealed that on the initial Sunday of BetMGM Poker MI, over 12,000 players engaged on the platform. This figure was comparable to the online poker volume of Borgata Poker in New Jersey and surpassed the combined number of cash-game players in all of the NJ online poker rooms.
On the same day, the website received a total of 260 participants for its recently introduced $215 buy-in $40,000 Sunday Guarantee tournament. As the weeks progressed, the number of participants for this event increased, reaching 375 entries on April 4 and 464 entries last Sunday (April 11). Consequently, the prize pool for the tournament amounted to $92,800, surpassing the guaranteed amount by more than double.
Continuing to ride the wave of success, the website also organized its biggest tournament yet, known as the BetMGM Grand Online Main Event.
The tournament had a $109 buy-in and lasted for two days. It guaranteed a prize of $100,000. In the end, there were 1,130 entries (including re-entries), resulting in a prize pool of $113,000. The winner, known as “Coolriver84,” walked away with a first prize of a little over $15,200. The final table was given live-stream coverage by LearnWPT, with hosts Tony Dunst and Andrew Lichtenberger.
Additionally, other events, such as the Daily $10K guarantee, have consistently surpassed their guaranteed prize pools.
Mallamaci expressed that our aim is to cater to players of every skill level through our event schedule and promotional offerings.
First BetMGM Online Series features 10 events, buy-ins from $20 to $535
In order to cater to players with varying bankrolls, the upcoming BetMGM Online Series offers a range of buy-in options.
Out of the 10 tournaments, nine are played in a variety of formats with differing table and stack sizes, all following the no-limit hold’em rules. Additionally, there is a pot-limit Omaha event available, where participants can join with a $109 buy-in and compete for a guaranteed prize pool of $10,000.
All tournaments in the schedule come with a guaranteed prize pool. The “Sunday Special” tournaments, which mark the beginning and end of the schedule, have a guaranteed prize pool of $75,000 each. The first tournament requires a buy-in of $215, while the final tournament has the highest buy-in of the series at $535. Additionally, there is an event called the “8-Max Mini” with a $20 buy-in and a guaranteed prize pool of $10,000.

The BetMGM Online Series has a more modest scope compared to PokerStars MI’s initial major tournament series, offering a total guarantee of $300,000.
Originally with $1 million in guarantees, the Michigan Championship of Online Poker (MICOOP) took place from late February to early March, comprising of 60 events. However, certain events saw an increase in their guarantees, resulting in MICOOP players ultimately earning over $2.2 million in winnings.
PokerStars MI maintains its advantage over BetMGM Poker MI in terms of cash-game traffic. According to PokerScout, the leading online poker traffic site, PokerStars MI currently boasts an average of 400 cash-game players over the span of seven days, whereas BetMGM Poker Michigan only has 75 cash-game players.
The player pool of BetMGM Poker MI is steadily expanding with an increasing number of daily sign-ups. Additionally, the hosting of tournament series and various special events is expected to attract more Michiganders, enticing them to explore the offerings of BetMGM Poker MI.
