Last night marked the conclusion of the biggest online poker tournament series ever held in Michigan, hosted on PokerStars MI. The Michigan Spring Championship of Online Poker (MISCOOP), consisting of 120 tournaments, came to an end on Monday night. Overall, the series spanned 17 days and saw Michigan players rake in an impressive $2.35 million in winnings.
In all fairness, the online poker history in Michigan is relatively brief, as PokerStars, the first online poker site in the state, was just launched in late January. However, the MISCOOP has managed to achieve remarkable numbers, surpassing PokerStars MI’s previous record of $2.2 million in winnings from the Michigan Championship of Online Poker (MICOOP) held in February and March.
Over 40,000 entries in 120 tourneys, Main Event awards $243K
The prize pools for the series surpassed the $2 million guarantees, totaling an impressive $2,356,657.40. With approximately 40,000 entries across the 120 tournaments, there was an average of 336 participants in each tournament.
The $300 buy-in Main Event (Event #36-H) significantly increased the prize pool total. With a $200,000 guarantee, the two-day no-limit hold’em tournament attracted a total of 871 entries, resulting in a record-breaking prize pool of $243,880. Ultimately, player “Stozypokes” emerged victorious, securing both the top prize and their second series win, earning a little over $41,000 for their exceptional performance.
Similar to the rest of the “SCOOP” series on PokerStars, the MISCOOP events showcased three separate levels with varying buy-ins: “high,” “medium,” and “low.”
Both the Main Events categorized as “medium” and “low” experienced minor overlays. The Main Event – Mid, priced at $75 (Event #36-M), accumulated a total of 577 entries, falling just 10 entries short of meeting the $40,000 guarantee. On the other hand, the Main Event – Mini, priced at $30 (Event #36-L), attracted 709 entries, requiring an additional twenty-four participants to reach its $20,000 guarantee.
In total, out of the 120 tournaments, 33 experienced overlays, although they were generally small in comparison to the prize pools. The biggest overlay occurred in the $50 Sunday Warm-Up (Event #20-M), amounting to a little over $4,100. Overall, the combined overlays added up to slightly over $35,000, averaging around $1,000 per occurrence.
MISCOOP best in site history, challenges PASCOOP numbers
The prize pool of $2.35 million received in MISCOOP exceeded the $2.2 million earned in the 60-tournament MICOOP series earlier this year. This amount is also competitive with other tournament series, such as the SCOOP series hosted by PokerStars’ US sites.
During April and May, the PASCOOP (Pennsylvania Spring Championship of Online Poker) took place, offering a 120-tournament schedule with a guaranteed prize pool of $2 million. PokerStars PA players triumphed throughout the series, ultimately winning a total of $2.64 million.
During the same May 8-24 period as MISCOOP, the New Jersey Spring Championship of Online Poker (NJSCOOP) was held. The NJSCOOP comprised 165 tournaments in total, offering guarantees totaling just over $1.2 million.
PokerStars NJ players emerged victorious, accumulating approximately $1.36 million in winnings throughout NJSCOOP, following the conclusion of the final events last night. Impressively, over 40% of the tournaments (68 out of 165) experienced overlays.
In an attempt to rival the last week of MISCOOP, BetMGM Poker Michigan, the alternative online poker platform in the state, organized the second edition of its BetMGM Online Series. Although BetMGM Poker Michigan launched in late March, it still has a long way to go before it can pose a serious threat to the dominant PokerStars MI in the state.
The 10-tournament series that took place from May 16-23 had a total guarantee of $315,000. However, apart from one tournament, all the others experienced overlays. Surprisingly, the overlays amounted to approximately $65,000, which is almost double the total overlays of MISCOOP.
The final prize awarded amounted to $316,400, which is lower than the $360,000 won during the initial BetMGM Online Series in April.
