Working at Playinmichigan has been fantastic because I can come up with ideas like, “Wouldn’t it be cool to test out odds for a live golf betting guide on the course at a PGA Tour event,” and everyone is completely supportive.
That’s all there was. Without any significant introduction, there was only a man, his phone, and a profound thought experiment.
With every intention to bet fearlessly, I embarked on a journey to Detroit Golf Club for the inaugural round of the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic. Though armed with only a partial strategy to boost my funds, I eagerly embraced the challenge.
I have knowledge in golf, as I’ve had some success betting on it while comfortably sitting on my couch. I trust in the guiding spirit and let’s make this an enjoyable experience.
Thursday was an absolute blast, filled with loads of fun. It was such an enjoyable experience that I have decided to refrain from diving in headfirst ever again. Allow me to explain why and share the valuable lessons I’ve learned.
Live Golf Betting Guide: Plenty Of Options
If you are familiar with the live golf betting scene or regularly place bets on golf, you likely have a good understanding of the current situation.
There are various options available in the world of futures markets and betting as an event progresses or a round unfolds. You can engage in head-to-head full-round matchups, choose winners for the day from groupings of up to six golfers, participate in hole-by-hole challenges, and many more exciting possibilities.
Although not exactly “dream it, do it,” the landscape in a guide to live golf betting is remarkably close. Today, my intention was to assess the situation firsthand and place bets based on my visual judgment.
Lay Of The Land
Upon my arrival at Wayne State University’s public mass gathering site, I parked and boarded the 15-minute shuttle to reach the course. It was already 8:30 a.m. by the time I arrived, and the first wave of featured groups had already completed four holes.
At 7:55 local time, Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, and Hideki Matsuyama (who later withdrew due to a positive COVID-19 test) commenced their round together.
As I patiently waited for the group at the 14th green during our camping trip, I decided to make my first wager of the day using my existing DraftKings Sportsbook account from a different state. To my delight, my balance smoothly transferred between jurisdictions without any issues. With confidence, I bet $10 on Jason Kokrak to outperform Patrick Reed in a head-to-head matchup, with attractive odds of +125.
For the most part, you will begin to observe a recurring pattern. When it comes to live golf matchups with Tour pros, there is often an element of chance involved. Hence, I tend to invest most of my money in finding the right value for head-to-head bets.
Registering For Michigan Sportsbooks Still Slick
Around 9 a.m., I began exploring additional app options during my wait. Unfortunately, BetMGM Sportsbook’s information couldn’t be transferred from my location in Iowa, so I decided to register again in Michigan. The process was quick and took me about 5 minutes to complete, using only cellular data. I was impressed by how fast No. 3 Michigan sportsbook processed the handle.
The markets for this local event, unfortunately, did not offer any surprising options. Regardless, I decided to bet $10 on either tournament favorite Bryson DeChambeau or former Masters champion Reed to achieve a bogey-free round with odds of +600. (Unfortunately, both bets were unsuccessful before the back nine started.)
The Mickelson-Fowler-Matsuyama group was approaching the 14th hole at 9:10, and I began browsing on PointsBet Sportsbook. I noticed that both Phil and Hideki had performance props for their upcoming holes. However, I observed that the markets were closing down at least one hole before the group reached that point in the round.
Therefore, the hole-by-hole markets are closing prematurely, meaning there is no opportunity to gain an advantage by cashing in.
As I observed the live DraftKings market for the 16th hole in this group, my concept was validated. As they reached the par-3 15th green, I noticed that the live market suddenly became empty. The sportsbooks are not willing to take any risks.
FanDuel Sportsbook’s Technology Mixed
During the course, the final experience entailed visiting the impressive setup of FanDuel Sportsbook near the 15th hole. As the top sportsbook in Michigan, they were offering group-by-group markets for closest-to-the-pin competitions on the small hole. These markets were being managed by an associate present at the site, leaving no opportunity to overlook the valuable on-site information.
However, despite all the glamorous promotion, the personalized markets were not appearing for iPhone users. I made sure to inform FanDuel employees about the technical problem and even checked multiple times throughout the day. It’s a shame they missed out on that aspect.
Nevertheless, the most significant victory of my day came from FanDuel’s market on the 15th hole. Observing the trio of Jason Day, Nick Taylor, and Jason Dufner pass through, I decided to place a $5 wager on the outcome of each player’s score. I predicted Day would achieve a par with odds of -260 (but he birdied instead), Taylor would obtain a par with odds of -210 (which he successfully did), and I took a risk by betting +1000 on Dufner scoring a bogey or worse.
The ex-PGA Championship winner came through for me by three-putting from 25 feet, resulting in a $50 score that greatly improved the rest of my day.
Weathering The Rocket Mortgage Classic Storm
Afterward, the weather began to engage in a game of cat-and-mouse with both spectators and tournament staff. At 12:15 p.m., a brief but intense rainfall soaked the course, making it unfit for play for a couple of hours while the grounds crew diligently worked to remove the water using squeegees. Just as the players were preparing to resume their positions, another powerful storm cell emerged, seemingly heading towards the course.
Despite its brief duration and minimal rainfall, the storm caused a delay of one hour. Additionally, my persistent checking of the weather radar drained my phone battery significantly. I had to rush to the fan zone in search of a functional charging station to revive my phone, ensuring I was ready for the game to resume, as well as for any potential betting activities.
Take this as a piece of advice: After 3 hours of betting and checking the weather, my 2.5-year-old device was almost completely drained. Make sure you are ready, or at least ready to quickly find a solution.
Finding A Golf Betting Groove
At 3:30, play recommenced, allowing the afternoon feature groups of Webb Simpson, Reed and Kokrak, and later Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Champ and Kramer Hickok, to continue their rounds on the course.
In the afternoon, I made a decision to focus my remaining bets on the two feature groups. DraftKings was efficiently updating their markets and I had the luck of easily accessing their app, so I chose to stick with that platform as I settled down on the fifth hole.
To gather information on score variances, I observed 2-3 groups playing the uphill par-3. After careful observation, I decided to place bets on Simpson at +280 over Reed and Hickok at +300 over DeChambeau, with each bet amounting to $5. Even if one of these bets were successful, I would secure a modest profit.
Simpson stumbled with a bogey when he failed to land on the green, while Hickok’s impressive 18-foot birdie putt earned me a profit of $15.
I attempted the exercise again on two additional holes with varying results. On the seventh hole, a par-5, I picked DeChambeau over Hickok due to DeChambeau’s impressive driving distance. DeChambeau successfully birdied the hole, but Hickok matched him with an impressive sidewinding birdie putt.
Afterwards, during the challenging par-3 ninth, I competed with both groupings and managed to tie the hole with -105 odds. Simpson and Reed achieved pars, while DeChambeau unfortunately failed to make an uphill par putt, resulting in losing the hole to Hickok. Overall, my attempt ended up being unsuccessful, leaving me with a loss.
Live Golf Betting Guide: Some Basic Tips
During my day, I made some small takeaways by wagering a total of $80 and successfully winning $121.73, resulting in a profit of approximately $42.
- It is important to be aware of your players’ tendencies. I had confidence in betting against DeChambeau on a par-3 because I knew his wedge game was not as strong compared to when he plays with the driver. Additionally, I was inclined towards Matsuyama’s +210 odds on a par-5 against Fowler, as Fowler’s performance has been lackluster for most of the past 18 months.
- Observing the performance of other groups playing the hole you plan to bet on can provide valuable insights. It will give you a good sense of the difficulty level, helping you assess the likelihood of achieving a par or birdie when betting individually. Additionally, it allows you to gauge the skills of players in a group and determine the probability of one player outscoring another. This mental analysis can assist in evaluating the true profitability of head-to-head hole values, which may not be as lucrative as they initially appear.
- Discover underdog bets that you feel at ease with. Golf can be quite unpredictable, particularly in head-to-head competitions, despite what individual matchups may suggest. However, by embracing a slight level of risk, you can uncover potential value in certain individual matchups.
- … However, it is crucial to always live within your financial capabilities. I didn’t label these uncertain ventures as “crapshoots” for no reason. While I anticipated occasional strokes of luck, it was thanks to the unexpected Dufner 10-to-1 long shot that I managed to nearly break even on my overall wagers, although I still ended up losing a bit of money after factoring in the fees. Sports betting is a complex endeavor, and it is unwise to risk substantial portions of your bankroll on these contests.
Bet To Your Comfort Level
I have a great passion for this game, and I particularly find live golf betting to be extremely enjoyable. Consequently, creating a handy guide was a natural outcome of my love for it. However, to be completely honest, I find that I am more suited to engage in the betting aspect comfortably from the comfort of my couch rather than at the actual course.
While this experience provided an enjoyable diversion and proved to be a worthwhile experiment, I doubt I would ever consider placing more than a few small bets at a similar event if I were to do it again.
I would never criticize someone for getting involved and taking risks. However, I would prefer to be immersed in nature, observing exceptional players showcasing their skills, rather than being fixated on my mobile device for yet another day.
