The NFL Draft has concluded and is now in the past. Following an eventful three days, the 2021 NFL futures odds have already experienced significant changes.
There was a great deal of negotiation and maneuvering happening, accompanied by a multitude of rumors that continue to circulate.
Detroit Lions emphasize lines of scrimmage
Under the leadership of new general manager Brad Holmes, the Detroit Lions demonstrated a successful NFL Draft, prioritizing the growth of their offensive and defensive lines.
Take a look at the seven selections they made.
- In the initial selection, the seventh spot of the first round is assigned to Oregon’s offensive tackle, Penei Sewell.
- Levi Onwuzurike, a defensive tackle from Washington, was selected as the ninth pick in the second round of the draft, making him the 41st overall pick.
- In the third round, with the 72nd overall pick, the team selected Alim McNeil from N.C. State as their defensive tackle.
- Syracuse’s Ifeatu Melifonwu, a cornerback, was selected as the 38th pick in the third round (101st overall).
- In the fourth round, with the seventh pick (112th overall), the USC wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown was selected.
- Derrick Barnes from Purdue was selected as the eighth pick in the fourth round (113th overall).
- RB Jermar Jefferson from Oregon State was selected as the 257th overall pick in the seventh round, specifically at No. 30.
Despite not making a flashy draft, the Lions received recognition from numerous media outlets for having a successful draft.
However, not much changed in terms of how the draft impacted their perceived chances of success in the upcoming season.
Upon joining the draft, the Lions remained consistently listed at +15000 to win Super Bowl LVI by both DraftKings Sportsbook and BetMGM Sportsbook, with no alterations to the odds throughout the entire weekend.
Throughout the NFC Championship race, Detroit was consistently listed at +6600 by DraftKings and +8000 by BetMGM.
NFC North outlooks shaken up
The Lions managed to enhance their NFL futures odds in the NFC North division race, although their success was not solely attributed to their own efforts.
Prior to the start of Thursday’s opening round, there were reports circulating that the Green Bay Packers’ renowned quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, expressed his desire to terminate his contract with the team.
On Thursday, ESPN Radio’s Mark Schlereth reported that a deal to send Rodgers to the Denver Broncos in the AFC West was almost finalized, pushing the story forward.
Despite the rumors failing to materialize over the weekend, they significantly influenced the future odds for both the Packers and the Broncos.
Before Thursday, Green Bay had odds of +1100, making them a top contender for the Super Bowl according to DraftKings. However, after the draft, their odds dropped to +2000. On the other hand, Denver started with odds of +6000 but managed to rise to +1600. BetMGM adjusted Green Bay’s odds from +1200 to +1600, whereas Denver’s odds went from +6600 to +2000.
The NFC North odds for next season were significantly impacted by the trade rumors. BetMGM decided to remove the division odds completely, while DraftKings made updates to their odds after the draft.
- The Green Bay Packers began with a -250 score and finished with a -121 score.
- The Minnesota Vikings began with odds of +350 but finished with odds of +250.
- Chicago Bears: Began with odds of +650 and finished with odds of +325.
- Detroit Lions: Began at +2800, concluded at +2000.
After the rumors, William Hill Sportsbook, like other operators, also adjusted the NFC North and Packers odds. When they resumed on Monday, Green Bay’s odds had shifted from being a -250 favorite to now just -125.
In the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes, DraftKings took it up a notch by providing odds on the team he will play his first snap with next season. The Packers remained the frontrunners with odds of -125, but Denver emerged as a contender with odds of +200. The Las Vegas Raiders (+500) and New Orleans Saints (+900) were the only other teams with odds below +1000.
Chicago Bears roll the dice, get aggressive
Over the weekend, Chicago garnered significant attention as one of the most discussed teams in the league.
In a trade, the Bears ascended from the 20th to the 11th spot in the first round to secure Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. As part of the agreement, Chicago offered the New York Giants their 2022 first-round pick.
Afterwards, Chicago proceeded to make a trade, moving up from the 52nd to the 39th pick, in order to choose Teven Jenkins, a tackle from Oklahoma State. Due to these two trades, the Bears were left without any further picks until the fifth round.
According to DraftKings, the Bears’ chances of winning the Super Bowl this season improved from +6000 to +5000, despite their relatively lower draft stock. On the other hand, BetMGM maintained the Bears’ odds at +5000 consistently.
Whose NFL stock is rising and falling?
The Broncos were the only team in the league that significantly improved their NFL futures odds this past weekend, as other teams did not make significant jumps.
Over the weekend, DraftKings observed significant odds improvements for five teams.
- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers began with odds of +750, but finished with odds of +650.
- The San Francisco 49ers began with odds of +1600 but finished with odds of +1400.
- The Dallas Cowboys began with odds of +2800 and finished with odds of +2500.
- The Seattle Seahawks began with odds of +2800 and concluded with odds of +2500.
- The Atlanta Falcons began with odds of +6000 and concluded with odds of +5000.
Over the weekend, DraftKings revealed that five teams have significantly lower odds for success next season. These teams have either made questionable draft choices or experienced unfavorable movements that may hinder their chances. In addition to the Packers being affected by trade rumors, several other teams have also seemingly jeopardized their prospects for the upcoming season.
- The Baltimore Ravens began with odds of +1300 and concluded with odds of +1500.
- The Indianapolis Colts began with odds of +2500 and concluded with odds of +2800.
- The Arizona Cardinals’ initial odds were +3300, but they finished with odds of +4000.
- The Pittsburgh Steelers began with odds of +3300 and concluded with odds of +4000.
- The Las Vegas Raiders began with odds of +6000, but finished with odds of +7500.
