Yesterday marked the conclusion of the inaugural poker tournament series on PokerStars MI, which undeniably achieved unprecedented success.
The winners of the inaugural Michigan Championship of Online Poker walked away with a staggering $2.2 million in prize money from a total of 60 events. The decision to enhance the guarantees during MICOOP clearly paid off, as the outcome far surpassed any initial expectations.
Nearly half of MICOOP events featured boosted guarantees
PokerStars wasted no time in making a strong impact during the MICOOP series, as they decided to boost the guarantees right before reaching the halfway point. The enhancements took place on February 27-28, during a thrilling Double Up Weekend. PokerStars MI made a significant move by doubling the guarantees for all 10 tournaments held on both Saturday and Sunday.
During the final week of MICOOP, PokerStars raised the guarantees for several tournaments. The most significant increase was seen in the Main Event, where the guarantee was raised from $125,000 to $200,000. Ultimately, 26 out of the 60 tournaments had higher guaranteed prize pools than initially intended.
The enhancements boosted the previously set total guaranteed prize pools of slightly over $1 million to nearly $1.43 million. Ultimately, merely four out of the 60 tournaments experienced overlays, with the most substantial being slightly over $9,700 in a $200 6-Max Turbo event held on Sunday.
In total, the MICOOP saw a staggering number of nearly 32,000 entries, comprising re-entries, rebuys, and add-ons across three rebuy events.
Business at PokerStars Michigan challenging PA and NJ
MICOOP players at PokerStars MI were awarded a staggering $2,208,002.20, surpassing the prize money offered during the first PACOOP in November-December 2019, where players won nearly $1.56 million. This achievement also exceeded the prize pool of the second PACOOP held in October 2020, where players took home almost $2.04 million.
The total amount easily surpasses the winnings of New Jersey players in the NJCOOP, as last autumn they only accumulated slightly above $1.12 million.
During the MICOOP event from February 20th to March 8th, both PokerStars PA and PokerStars NJ simultaneously organized the Bounty Builder Series.
The PokerStars PA Bounty Builder Series distributed a total prize pool of slightly above $2 million across 75 events, whereas the PokerStars NJ Bounty Builder Series comprised 58 events and granted just under $700,000 in winnings.
It should be mentioned that PokerStars is currently the sole operating online poker site in Michigan and Pennsylvania, giving them a monopoly in those states. However, PokerStars NJ faces competition from several other online poker sites.
MICOOP Main draws nearly 1,300 entries, prize pool of $360K
The MICOOP Main Event, with a buy-in of $300, managed to draw in a total of 1,284 entries. As a result, the prize pool soared to $359,520, surpassing the initial $200K guarantee. The title was claimed by player “smftt,” who took home an impressive first prize of over $56,000.
The MICOOP Main Event undoubtedly marked the biggest tournament thus far in the brief existence of PokerStars MI, standing shoulder to shoulder with some of the grandest events held on PokerStars PA since its introduction in November 2019.
The MICOOP Main Event, with a comparable structure and a $300 buy-in along with re-entries, outperformed the PACOOP Main Event held in October last year. The 2020 PACOOP Main Event attracted slightly more than 1,000 entries, resulting in a prize pool of just over $283,000.
In the meantime, PokerStars PA has organized three unique Pennsyl-MANIA tournaments, each offering substantial guarantees that have resulted in the creation of larger prize pools.
In May 2020, Pennsyl-MANIA marked a significant milestone as the biggest tournament in the history of PokerStars PA, boasting an impressive prize pool of nearly $516,000. However, the subsequent installment experienced a decline in participation, resulting in a smaller turnout and a prize pool of approximately $377,000. Conversely, the third iteration guaranteed a hefty $500,000, but ultimately fell short with an overlay.
It wouldn’t be surprising if PokerStars MI introduces its own version of a special event similar to Pennsyl-MANIA. This would determine whether PokerStars MI can successfully organize a bigger event compared to what PokerStars PA has accomplished so far.
Let’s take a glance at the participants and prize pools for all 60 events of the inaugural MICOOP.
