Can you rephrase this?

Alongside a touch of accountability and amusement, we recognize that there is also a hint of schadenfreude associated with our weekly Wiseguys feature.

We have been closely monitoring the NFL picks against the spread made by Detroit media members who openly share them. We were well aware that some of our fellow media colleagues would struggle at times, maybe even for entire seasons.

It is challenging to handicap games, and even the professionals in Michigan sports betting often struggle and end up losing.

However, this is definitely not true for Detroit radio legend Mike Stone (pictured wearing a red sweatshirt), whose selections we have not been monitoring on a weekly basis. But as it happens, the public should have been following Stoney from the beginning of this season for NFL odds.

Stoney and college friend won nearly $50K in first quarter

For the second consecutive year, Stone, one of the co-hosts of the morning show on 97.1 The Ticket, was persuaded by a colleague at the station to participate in the Circa Sports Million III competition.

Stone, a beginner in betting, found the price to be quite steep. To make it more affordable, he decided to join forces with his college friend and split the $1,000 entry fee. Additionally, Stone had a personal motive to support his friend Derek Stevens, a renowned hotelier from Detroit who had achieved great success in Las Vegas, as seen in the main photo on the right.

Last month, Stoney took charge of making the five weekly point-spread selections through the Las Vegas proxy on Friday after the radio show, as his friend was unable to do so.

Following a successful 4-1 week, Stone’s friend encouraged him to continue making picks, recognizing his impressive winning streak. Stone went on to have another outstanding week, achieving a perfect 5-0 record. In Week 3, Stone maintained his momentum with a 4-1 mark, and he followed it up with yet another flawless 5-0 performance in Week 4.

  • By placing a $5 moneyline bet on DraftKings, you have the opportunity to receive $200 worth of free bets.
  • With only one touchdown, you can turn $10 into a pair of $100 free bets on BetMGM.

Overall, Stoney led the pair to a remarkable 18-2 start, resulting in a five-way tie for first place after four weeks of competition. This achievement positioned them among the top contenders for prize money. Ultimately, their victory earned them a generous sum of $49,350, which they agreed to split between them. The contest itself attracted a significant number of participants, with 4,087 entries. Notably, Circa Millions, without taking any commission, will distribute a total of $4,087,000 in prizes. This includes a grand prize of $1 million and an esteemed blue jacket for the ultimate winner.

Stoney and his friend unexpectedly won an extra $31,000 from the Week 4 Las Vegas Raiders’ loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday Night Football. Stoney, true to his usual style, didn’t bother to check his opponent’s predictions that week and only discovered his substantial wager on the game after the fact.

Since then, Stoney’s Circa picks still holding strong

Last week, Stevens handed Stone a colossal check during his visit to Circa Las Vegas, where he conducted live broadcasts from the vibrant Sin City. It’s worth noting that this included starting a “morning show” at the early hour of 3 a.m. local time, as the festivities in the area often continue well into the night.

In an interview with the Odds On show of VSiN last week, Stone confessed, “I was simply fortunate. I didn’t put much effort into researching; I simply relied on my intuition.” He further revealed, “My college buddies mockingly refer to me as Mush, implying that everything I predict or decide turns out to be erroneous. If they inquire about my predictions, they immediately opt for the opposite outcome.”

Unfortunately, it won’t be happening this time.

In Week 5, Stoney, the host of the show alongside former Michigan All-American lineman Jon Jansen and Heather Park, achieved a 3-1-1 record. However, during the recent weekend, he experienced his first week with a record below .500, going 2-3. Starting off in second place before Week 6, it is anticipated that Stoney will drop in the standings due to some mistakes. Presently, he finds himself in a nine-way tie for ninth place in the season-long contest, holding a record of 23-6-1.

Stoney’s strategy: Stay away from Thursday night and the Lions

How did Stoney manage to avoid Thursday games? He made sure to steer clear of the Detroit Lions as well. Being a Philadelphia native, Stoney has been living in Detroit for a long time and is fully aware of the chaos that the Lions can bring.

“They will deceive you regardless,” Stone warned Playinmichigan. “Whether you wager for or against them, they will find a way to cheat you.”

Stone experienced early losses in the form of a defeat against the Chargers during Week 1 while playing for Washington. Additionally, in Week 3, Stone had a challenging outcome when the Miami Dolphins successfully covered against the Raiders in the final moments of the game.

He has also experienced moments of good luck. For instance, during Week 4, Washington managed to secure a narrow victory against Atlanta through some last-minute heroics.

“Despite my lack of skill, it’s quite peculiar how everyone focuses on their unfortunate losses while overlooking the extraordinary victories,” Stone reflected. “I may not excel in this, but I’ve still experienced some rather fortunate outcomes.”

Beloved radio host has worked with Detroit’s best

Stoney has become a prominent figure in the Detroit sports radio community, regularly joining Mitch Albom on WJR-760 during the early days of the market’s sports radio presence.

Afterwards, he gained significant recognition when he joined forces with Bob Wojnowski from The Detroit News for the renowned Stoney and Wojo show on WDFN-1130 AM. As of now, Wojo is leading in our Wiseguys picks compilation standings for this season.

Last year, Jamie Samuelsen, who was highly regarded and beloved, joined forces with Stone as partners for The Ticket’s morning show, until his unfortunate passing due to colon cancer.

What are his plans for the money? Well, he used it to install a new roof for the Stones during the summer, and he also used it to support his daughters’ college education.

He mentioned that anything would be beneficial.
