Wednesday marks the reopening of a tribal casino in the Upper Peninsula, following a closure of over a month.

Island Resort and Casino in Harris made the announcement on Friday, which coincided with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s decision to extend the stay-at-home order in Michigan until May 28.

Whitmer does not have jurisdiction over tribal casinos as they are situated on reservation land.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Island Resort and Casino, managed by the Hannahville Indian Community, has remained closed since March 21, resulting in a closure period of over six weeks.

Since all 26 Michigan casinos closed in March due to the pandemic, this facility will be the first to reopen.

Phased-in approach for reopening casino

The announcement was first made by Island Resort and Casino on their website and Facebook, as reported by MLive.

On Wednesday, a phased-in approach will be followed for the opening, making slot machines, select to-go food service, bars, bingo, and retail accessible.

Sage Run and Sweetgrass golf courses are scheduled to open on May 8, while the hotel is set to open on May 13.

As per the announcement, the facility will later include table games, poker, as well as the spa, pool, and fitness center.

Extra precautions will be taken

Upon arrival, guests will have their temperature checked using an infrared thermometer. Any customer with a temperature reading exceeding 100.0 degrees will be denied entry.

According to the announcement, masks are recommended but not mandatory, and plexiglass barriers have been installed in the casino to divide guests.

Employee and guest areas will undergo consistent sanitization, and there has been an increase in the number of hand sanitizer dispensers available.

It is recommended to maintain a distance of six feet for social distancing. Additionally, the announcement urges individuals who are feeling unwell or are more susceptible to illness to refrain from attending.

Several safety measures will be implemented, including the absence of luggage service, valets, shuttles, and other necessary precautions. While golf carts are permitted on the course, the rangers will take care of raking the sand traps for you.

COVID-19 cases decreasing in Michigan

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted Michigan, making it one of the most heavily affected states.

On Friday, the number of positive cases reported exceeded 42,000, while the total death toll approached 3,900.

With 3,866 deaths, this state ranks third in terms of the highest number of fatalities. However, Friday witnessed the lowest daily increase in reported cases since Monday, with only 977 new cases.

As of Friday, the state’s website states that Menominee County, where Island Resort and Casino is located, has recorded five cases of COVID-19 with no reported deaths.

No other casinos have announced openings

The Island Resort and Casino, among 23 tribal casinos in Michigan, plays a significant role as an economic powerhouse for the 12 federally recognized tribes in the state.

In the Upper Peninsula, there are a total of eleven tribal casinos, out of which the five Kewadin Casino establishments will remain closed until May 15. As for the remaining casinos, their reopening dates have yet to be confirmed.

Although the Lac Vieux Desert Golf Course, managed by the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa tribe, resumed operations on Friday, the Northern Waters Casino Resort in Watersmeet, located near the Wisconsin border, remains closed.
