In July, the Michigan Lottery launched a groundbreaking $10 instant win ticket that revolutionized potential payouts. While the tickets featured a typical top prize of $1 million, they also presented a unique opportunity to win up to $1 billion in cash.
With its second-chance prize, the game known as Golden Ticket (which takes inspiration from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) revolutionized the conventional lottery format.
Despite the possibility of winning, residents of Michigan do not seem to be enthusiastic about the new game. After almost three months, nearly 70 percent of the game’s prizes remain unclaimed, including the three highest prizes worth $1 million each.
As per the Michigan Lottery,
More than $14 million has been won by players participating in GOLDEN TICKET™, with a whopping $42.7 million still up for grabs. This includes three grand prizes of $1 million each and a total of 46 prizes worth $10,000 each.
In addition, the Michigan Lottery had initially stated that it intended to distribute 15 prize packages through second-chance drawings when the game was announced. However, it appears that the lottery has slightly reduced that number.
Out of the planned five second-chance drawings, only four fortunate individuals have emerged victorious, securing a prize package encompassing an exhilarating trip to Las Vegas and an opportunity to compete for the grand prize of $1 billion.
The lottery has announced that only six additional winners will be selected in the latest update.
The reason for the lack of interest may be attributed to the burdensome task of entering ticket codes from non-winning tickets for the second drawing. This concern has prompted the Michigan Lottery to revamp its rewards program in order to make the process simpler.
How the second chance drawing works
According to the Michigan Lottery website, every $10 GOLDEN TICKET™ provides players with 20 opportunities to win instant prizes ranging from $10 to $1 million. Additionally, players can enter codes from non-winning tickets for a shot at winning one of 15 trips for two to Las Vegas. This also grants them the chance to participate in the BILLION DOLLAR CHALLENGE™ and potentially win up to $1 billion.
The recipients of the second-chance prize will be awarded a fully paid trip for two individuals to Las Vegas, which encompasses:
- four-day, three-night stay in luxurious hotel accommodations
- airfare for two people for a return trip
- Transportation between the Las Vegas airport and hotel will be provided on the ground.
- $1,000 cash to spend
