The outcome of the game between Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions was quite evident, with some considering it a “referendum game.”

The Lions stink again.

Just a few weeks ago, there was a widespread belief, shared by many including myself, that Detroit had the potential to be a playoff contender in the upcoming 2022-23 season.

Playoffs? Playoffs? (I hope you read that with the intended voice of Jim Mora Sr.)

In Week 5’s Sunday game, the Lions disappointingly failed to make an appearance in any aspect. They suffered a harsh 29-0 defeat against the New England Patriots, a team led by a rookie quarterback and whose defense ranked unfavorably in the league’s lower tier.

Michigan sports bettors were disappointed as they witnessed their hopes of a 3.5-point spread cover dashed, with no effort made by the team.

It goes without saying that Lions media and the fanbase had numerous thoughts on Twitter following Sunday’s disappointing performance.

Pregame enthusiasm

Prior to kickoff, it’s understandable that Detroit Lions fans lack confidence in the team. They have endured numerous disappointments in the past, leaving them hesitant to fully trust again.

Additionally, the Patriots entered the game donning their throwback uniforms, which are regarded as some of the finest in the league.

This game held greater significance for Campbell and his team, as they faced former coach Matt Patricia, who would be calling plays from the opposing sideline.

Twitter reacts to early Jared Goff interception

The Lions fell short on 4th and 1 during their first possession, which turned out to be the start of an ongoing trend. However, they were able to regain momentum and drive towards the end zone on their second possession.

Despite Jared Goff’s attempt to make a play in the red zone, his pass was intercepted by Jack Jones from New England. Jones showcased exceptional skill by managing to stay inbounds while catching the ball, despite facing double coverage.

It would set the tone for a long day.

4th-and-Ohhhh No

The initial unsuccessful attempt on 4th and 1 would mark the beginning of a series of failed fourth downs for the Lions. On Sunday, Detroit failed to convert on all six 4th down attempts.

Fumble for a TD

In the second quarter, a critical play took place at the New England 32-yard line – a 4th and 9 – which could arguably be considered the most significant moment of the day.

Despite being only down 6-0, Campbell chose to go for a first down rather than attempt a lengthy field goal. This decision led to Goff fumbling the ball, which was then recovered by Kyle Dugger of the Patriots. Dugger proceeded to return the ball 59 yards for a touchdown.

Although I lack knowledge of the French language, encountering the word “catastrophe” in a Tweet is a clear indication that the content is unfavorable.

Why not kick?

The Lions have unquestionably faced challenges in their kicking game, yet certain fans have raised the valid point of why include a kicker in the roster if they do not plan to utilize them?

The last five attempts on 4th down all occurred within a range of 51 yards or less, where a field goal could have been attempted instead.

History-making futility

Once again, Detroit made its mark in history for the wrong reasons on Sunday, as the 0-for-6 on fourth down became an unprecedented occurrence in a single game.

Twitter reacts to Aidan Hutchinson’s struggles

Aidan Hutchinson, the second pick, once again had a game where he failed to make a significant impact.

Ever since his impressive 3-sack performance in Week 2, Hutchinson’s pass rush abilities have significantly declined, and unfortunately, he has not displayed any signs of progress or improvement in this aspect.

People are starting to pay attention due to being chosen as a top pick.

Campbell losing the fanbase

After Detroit’s feature on HBO’s Hard Knocks, Dan Campbell quickly gained popularity nationwide, becoming somewhat of a beloved figure.

His message of “grit” resonated with people across the country, causing a surge in the Coach of the Year odds markets.

Currently, Campbell is portrayed in a completely contrasting light, as a second-year coach who is already overwhelmed and struggling.

Campbell’s presence on Twitter gained significant attention after the game, but unfortunately, it was not due to positive circumstances.

Can’t lose next week

Dan Campbell’s fortunate news is that he cannot suffer a defeat next week since the Lions will be on a bye.

Get ready for the “Bye favored by 3” jokes that are about to flood your timeline this week.

The Cowboys in Dallas on Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. will be the awaited opponent for the Lions in two weeks.

It seems like Dak Prescott’s comeback from injury could lead to more entertaining moments on Twitter.
