Updated after Week 18

Prior to the start of the season, we embarked on an experiment centered around the following query: What would be the outcome if we placed a $100 bet on the Detroit Lions moneyline for every week of the season?

The outcome turned out to be quite a roller coaster ride, far beyond our initial expectations. However, surprisingly enough, our previously adored underdogs managed to triumph in the end.

The Lions not only triumphed over the formidable Aaron Rodgers and the Packers to conclude the season, but also ensured a profitable outcome for bettors.

After 17 games and an 18-week season, a bettor who consistently placed a $100 wager on the Lions every week ended up with a profit of $157.11. We will provide a detailed explanation of the process below.

What is the Detroit Lions moneyline tracker?

The concept is straightforward: If individuals betting at Michigan sportsbooks were to consistently place moneyline bets on the Detroit Lions in every game throughout the season, what would be their overall profit or loss by the end of the year?

Just to clarify, we did not make these bets, nor do we recommend that you do. This was simply a fictional exercise for entertainment purposes.

However, in our hypothetical scenario, a $100 bet was placed on the Lions moneyline every week. To simplify matters, we used the final moneyline provided at DraftKings Sportsbook MI.

What is the reason for choosing the moneyline? It is due to the variability in outcomes. When betting against the spread, the odds are almost equal for each game. In contrast, moneyline bets have the potential for much larger payouts if the Lions, who are often considered underdogs, emerge victorious. In theory, even with a record of 7-10 or 6-11, those who bet on the Lions could come out ahead at the end of the season.

Alternatively, they could have had a record of 9-8, with all their wins coming as favorites, and yet they managed to not cause any losses for bettors.

Before the game, there was a significant surge of support for the Lions on DraftKings, causing a negative impact on profits. The Lions’ odds started at +200 around 8 p.m., but dropped to +155 just before kick-off.

Contrary to expectations, the Packers did not receive a sudden influx of money after the Lions were eliminated from the playoffs around 7:30. People displayed their intelligence by refraining from placing bets.

The Lions were driven by pride, while the Packers were motivated by their desire to make it to the playoffs. In the end, pride triumphed.

Despite not securing a playoff berth, Detroit’s victory concluded a strong finish to their last 10 games, with a record of 8-2. This success was also reflected in the moneyline tracker.
