The last professional sports team in Detroit formed two sports betting partnerships, choosing to collaborate with the top companies in the industry.
On Monday morning, the Detroit Pistons revealed their partnerships with DraftKings and FanDuel, joining three other teams in the endeavor. All parties involved are eagerly anticipating the significant impact of NBA betting in Michigan.
BetMGM had previously announced deals with the Lions and Red Wings, while the Tigers became the first MLB team to form a betting partnership by signing with PointsBet this summer.
It is possible that Michigan online sports betting may be launched in late December, but there is also a chance that it could be delayed until early 2021.
Regardless of the circumstances, online gambling will be introduced before fans are permitted to return to arenas. Eventually, fifteen operators will initiate their services in collaboration with casino operators, which will include the state’s 12 federally recognized Native American tribes.
Pistons team up with DraftKings, FanDuel
Michigan is expected to see DraftKings and FanDuel leading the way as sports betting operators in the state.
In addition, the companies will benefit from the agreement as they gain access to official Pistons marks and logos. These deals will encompass various marketing assets such as in-arena signage, activations, television and digital advertising. Furthermore, they will also have a presence on TV and radio to attract Pistons fans towards their respective sports betting offerings.
Mike Zavodsky, the Pistons’ chief business officer, expressed his gratitude for the partnership-oriented and cooperative approach exhibited by both FanDuel and DraftKings. He eagerly anticipates using the Pistons’ platform to assist in expanding their presence and strengthening their ties to the Pistons and the wider Detroit Metro communities.
FanDuel has formed its second partnership with an NBA team, following its recent agreement with the Memphis Grizzlies this month.
Contrary to the DraftKings agreement made this year between the Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field, Little Caesars Arena (LCA) will not feature a sportsbook.
Deal also includes partnership with MotorCity Casino
The Pistons will also collaborate with MotorCity Casino, located in downtown Detroit and owned by Marian Ilitch. Ilitch, the matriarch of the family, is the owner of the Tigers and Red Wings.
MotorCity introduced its very own FanDuel Sportsbook in March, providing an exceptional retail experience to sports enthusiasts. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing pandemic, MotorCity remains closed at least until next week, disrupting the game-day experiences that were anticipated to be offered at the book.
Before, during, and after games, MotorCity Casino aims to provide a variety of sports betting experiences, exclusive viewing parties, and game-day giveaways.
The Sound Board venue at the casino has been the official host of team watch parties for certain road games over the past few seasons.
Mike Raffensperger, CMO of FanDuel, expressed the Pistons’ dedication to their fans and their forward-thinking approach. He emphasized the valuable partnership opportunity that arises from combining their retail Sportsbook experience with live Pistons games in the arena. This collaboration will enable them to develop innovative strategies to connect with Pistons fans. By leveraging the FanDuel Sportsbook at MotorCity Casino and the FanDuel Sportsbook app, they aim to provide exciting experiences both inside and outside the arena. Additionally, fans will have access to exclusive betting promotions and content, enhancing their overall engagement.
DraftKings will let fans be ‘Piston For A Day’
As part of the partnership, fans will have a unique opportunity to become part of the team through the most specific feature revealed.
Contest participants on DraftKings have an opportunity to become an honorary member of the Pistons team for a day.
Included in the VIP experience are:
- A “Pistons Contract”
- An opportunity to take a photo with the front office members.
- A customized Pistons jersey and warm-up apparel.
- A locker room tour
- A photo taken after the game at LCA.
- Gain exclusive access to the team’s practice facility in the New Center area for a one-hour shootaround.
Ezra Kucharz, DraftKings’ chief business officer, expressed excitement about partnering with the Detroit Pistons for their inaugural professional team activation in Michigan. He highlighted that this collaboration strengthens their connection with a prominent local team, enabling them to offer enhanced fan experiences. This opportunity aims to cater to both Michigan residents already familiar with regulated gaming products and those new to the industry.
In a strategic collaboration, DraftKings has joined forces with the Bay Mills Indian Community to establish its presence in Michigan. The company proudly declared its exclusive role as the official daily fantasy sports provider for the Pistons.
