Could the 2022-23 NHL Season be the long-awaited year for the Detroit Red Wings to make a playoff push with a fresh head coach leading the team?
Based on the oddsmakers’ predictions, it is highly unlikely.
Despite having a positive offseason, the Detroit Wings remain overlooked by the majority of NHL odds markets.
Are there any potential opportunities for sports bettors in Michigan when it comes to the 2022-23 Wings?
Red Wings 2022-23 Season Odds
Even with the alterations made to the coaching staff and roster, the Red Wings remain among the unlikely contenders for the Stanley Cup this season.
When it comes to the longest odds to raise the Cup, Detroit is still ranked in the bottom third of NHL teams.
The Red Wings are considered a longshot in the Eastern Conference and Atlantic Division as well.
Will busy offseason buck the losing trend?
In the 2021-22 season, the Red Wings accumulated a total of 74 points, securing the 12th position in the Eastern Conference.
General manager Steve Yzerman didn’t find it satisfactory and thus decided to dismiss coach Jeff Blashill. He subsequently appointed former Tampa Bay assistant Derek Lalonde as his replacement.
From 2018 to 2022, Lalonde served as an assistant for the Tampa Bay Lightning, collaborating closely with Yzerman. Together, they contributed to the team’s victorious campaigns, resulting in the acquisition of two Stanley Cups.
During the offseason, Yzerman had a packed schedule. In addition to securing a new coach, he successfully acquired C Andrew Copp, D Ben Chiarot, LW David Perron, and LW Dominik Kubalik as valuable additions through free agency.
The Wings have a lot of talent to work with, including the 2022 Calder Trophy winner D Mortiz Seider, RW Lucas Raymond, C Dylan Larkin, and LW Tyler Bertuzzi, who all contribute to the team’s success.
The last time the Wings reached the playoffs and accumulated 80 points or more was during the 2015-16 season.
The regular season for Detroit commences on October 14th with a game against Montreal, hosted in Detroit.
Lalonde NHL Coach of the Year Odds
Entering a positive head coaching situation is how Lalonde would be perceived by many.
Lalonde has a chance to make a name for himself with the combination of promising young talent and a successful GM from another team.
His debut season is still expected to be a difficult one by oddsmakers.
DraftKings Sportsbook MI has listed Lalonde with +2500 odds to win the Jack Adams Award, which is given to the NHL’s Coach of the Year.
Sheldon Keefe, Jared Bednar, Jay Woodcroft, and Gerard Gallant are all considered leading contenders with odds of +1200 in their respective teams: Maple Leafs, Avalanche, Oilers, and Rangers.
According to BetMGM Michigan, Lalonde is currently receiving the highest amount of bets in the market, with a handle of 29.8%. He is listed at +1600 odds.
Alex Nedeljkovic Vezina odds
There isn’t much enthusiasm among oddsmakers for any Red Wings player making a strong case for MVP accolades this season.
Nevertheless, goalie Alex Nedeljkovic has the potential to surprise everyone and emerge as a strong contender for season honors. Currently in his second season with Detroit and sixth in the NHL, Nedeljkovic’s performance could exceed expectations.
Nedeljkovic, who achieved a 3.31 GAA and 20 wins during the 2021-22 season, is currently listed at +15000 by BetMGM Michigan as a potential candidate for the NHL’s league MVP, the Hart Trophy, this season.
Nedeljkovic’s odds to win the Vezina Trophy are also listed at +10000.
Nedeljkovic achieved personal bests with 52 starts and 59 appearances in net, along with securing 20 wins throughout his career.
Mo Seider Norris odds
After being crowned Rookie of the Year, Mo Seider has a +2000 odds on DraftKings to clinch the prestigious James Norris Trophy for the top defenseman. Seider showcased his talent by amassing an impressive 50 points during his debut season with the Wings.
Seider (+2000) is receiving 29.5% of the bets in the Norris market at BetMGM. However, this only represents 4.5% of the total amount wagered.
Last season, Captain Dylan Larkin emerged as the leading scorer for the Red Wings, tallying an impressive 31 goals and 69 points. However, Bertuzzi was not far behind, showcasing his skills with 30 goals and 62 points.
The pair should strive to reclaim the position of team leader, but their chances of competing for the league scoring title are slim.
Bertuzzi is listed as +12500 by Caesars Sportsbook MI to top the NHL in goals, while BetMGM offers odds of +15000 for him to lead in points.
Larkin is listed at +100000 by DraftKings for the possibility of becoming the highest goal scorer in the league this season, while BetMGM offers odds of +50000 for him to lead the NHL in points.
David Perron, one of the recent acquisitions, is garnering interest from futures markets. PointsBet Sportsbook MI has set his odds at +25000 to win the NHL MVP. Additionally, Perron is listed at +40000 by PointsBet to emerge as the league’s leading goal scorer.
