Pop culture is deeply influenced by nostalgia in every aspect.

This is equally true in the realm of retail casino gaming, particularly when it comes to slot machines.

Despite the rapid advancements in game technology in recent decades, older games continue to remain relevant.

Even though stepper slots may be largely outdated, their underlying themes continue to thrive.

Something that was once old can be made new again.

You can still find some of your beloved games from the late 90’s or early 2000’s on casino floors all over the state.

Keeping stepper slots relevant at Michigan casinos

The previous stepper slots were quite simple. They consisted of three mechanical reels and had only a few coin options. All you had to do was insert your coin, pull the reel, and wish for a favorable outcome.

The stepper slots have transformed in today’s society, transitioning into a digital format that offers users a wider range of denominations and more playing lines to choose from.

While the core gameplay remains unchanged, the available choices for users have expanded significantly.

According to Gary Fagone, Director of Slot Performance at FireKeepers Casino Hotel, manufacturers like IGT are bringing back their older classic games and adapting them for newer cabinets. Games such as Haywire, Coyote Moon, White Orchid, and Wolf Run are being updated with larger screens and expanded pay fields. While some of these games still offer the traditional maximum bets and coin lines, they are also introducing newer features with higher betting options. In the past, the maximum bet for these games was 250 credits, but now players can choose to bet 400 or 600 credits to keep up with current trends.

Aristocrat, along with other manufacturers, has also embraced the upgraded format that aligns with today’s style and is being implemented by IGT.

“(Manufacturers) are reintroducing some of these other titles and modifying them for high limit rooms,” Fagone explained. “A prime example of this is Aristocrat. We recently installed a game called High Limit Pompeii and High Limit Buffalo. These games are essentially the classic Buffalo and Pompeii games, but they have been adjusted to accommodate higher denominations. Now, players can choose to play with nickels, dimes, or quarters, while still experiencing the traditional nine-line gameplay. The industry is striving to remain current by incorporating older mathematical models and game styles.”

Killing two birds with one stone

Current technology is essential for games to remain up-to-date.

The transition to digital cabinets was crucial in preserving the timeless appeal of classic slot games.

“Several years ago, we hypothesized that newer games outperform older ones. This applies not only to the theme but also to the actual physical, mechanical, and technological reliability of the game,” stated Steven Senk, VP of Slot Operations at FireKeepers. He further added, “New games tend to be more stable and demand less maintenance. In the case of video games, they are gentler on the eyes. Overall, new games triumph over old ones.”

Manufacturers find the new technology crucial as they constantly seek ways to persuade casinos into acquiring new and enhanced equipment.

Restoring old games to a new format is a cost-effective endeavor for the manufacturer since they can concentrate on new hardware rather than developing a new theme.

According to Senk, manufacturers have taken a while to realize the importance of reusing successful older themes in their games. Many manufacturers have a vast library of themes, and they are now revisiting and adapting some of these themes to create new options for players. This process involves keeping the essence and originality of the theme intact while adding a few enhancements, such as a more exciting bonus round or slight variations. The goal is not to create a completely different game, but rather to provide players with more choices. Manufacturers are now prioritizing the reliability, compatibility, features, and updates of new hardware in order to sell their latest products. However, they are discovering that they don’t need to start from scratch to achieve this; they can utilize existing successful themes instead.

Slot machine cabinet performance drastically improved

Shifting towards digital cabinets has proven to be a beneficial move for the industry and casino floors, as Senk pointed out.

Compared to older mechanical machines, digital cabinets have a slightly extended lifespan and encounter fewer minor issues. While mechanical machines typically struggle to last for five years, digital cabinets have the potential to operate for up to seven years.

“Hardware is a costly aspect for us. While players may not be concerned about whether a game is on a new or old cabinet as long as they enjoy it, we prioritize the functionality of the game. It is crucial for us that every button and light works seamlessly according to our standards,” stated Senk. “Different casinos may hold varying opinions on this matter, as some may not have the financial resources to invest in the latest cabinets. They might explore ways to ensure the old ones continue to operate. However, disregarding any supply chain issues, after approximately five years, even if the same style of cabinet is still being produced, that specific cabinet is likely to be near the end of its lifespan. From a maintenance perspective, it is preferable to refresh them every five years or so, with a maximum lifespan of seven years.”

Despite the high performance of the cabinets for a five-year duration, manufacturers are continuously striving to achieve more frequent advancements.

In the present era, five years is a considerable duration. The rapid progress of technology can render something nearly obsolete within just five years.

According to Fagone, cabinet hardware revolves around money. Manufacturers are constantly striving to introduce larger, superior, and more eye-catching products in order to entice casinos into purchasing their new cabinets. Fagone mentioned that manufacturers release a new cabinet approximately every two years.

Michigan online casinos continue growth, expansion

Traditional game themes have also made their presence felt in the realm of online casinos.

Michigan’s 15 online operators offer a variety of names, including White Orchid and Wolf Run.

In March 2022, Michigan achieved another milestone by breaking a new online casino revenue record. As a result, it is anticipated that more traditional casinos will seek to expand their presence by transitioning to the online platform in some form.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board announced on Monday that the online casino revenue for last month in Michigan reached an impressive $131.7 million. This outstanding figure surpassed the previous record by almost $10 million.

Michigan has achieved over $120 million in online casino revenue for the fourth consecutive month.

Since January, the game count has increased for 10 online casinos in Michigan, and a 15th operator, Eagle Casino & Sports, has launched. As a result, there should be a rise in revenue and more games available.
