In Michigan, college basketball fans get their first taste of Madness on the opening day of March.
Starting on Tuesday night, both Oakland University and University of Detroit Mercy will begin their postseason journey as the Horizon League men’s basketball tournament commences.
Although Cleveland State is the clear favorite at the sportsbooks, the conference consists of seven teams that ended the regular season within a three-game difference of each other.
How to watch the Horizon League tournament
On Tuesday, the Horizon League men’s basketball tournament commences with four games, all being hosted by seeds 5 through 8. Following the first and second rounds, the tournament undergoes re-seeding.
On Thursday, during the second round, the top four seeds will be included and given the privilege of hosting. All matches in the initial two rounds will take place either at 7 or 8 p.m. while being broadcasted on ESPN+.
The semifinals are scheduled to take place on Monday, March 7th, at Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis. The first match will start at 7 p.m., followed by the second match at 9:30 p.m. You can catch the live coverage of these games on ESPNU and ESPN2, respectively.
The championship game is scheduled for Tuesday, March 8th, at 7 p.m. It will take place at Indiana Farmers Coliseum and will be televised on ESPN. The team that emerges victorious in the tournament will secure an automatic spot in the NCAA men’s tournament.
Oakland University Horizon League odds
Coming off a tremendous victory against the number one seeded Cleveland State, the Golden Grizzlies confidently step into the conference tournament.
This past Saturday, Oakland secured a 65-57 home victory against the Vikings, solidifying their position as the fifth seed in the tournament. Additionally, their win caused Cleveland State to be tied with Purdue Fort Wayne, who ended the season with an impressive nine-game winning streak.
Oakland had a fluctuating season, concluding with a 19-11 overall record and 12-7 in conference play. The Grizzlies triumphed in their initial seven Horizon League games, yet experienced defeat in six of their last nine matches.
The victory over Cleveland State ended a three-game losing streak.
The Horizon League tournament commences with a home game for Oakland against 12 seed IUPUI, led by conference co-Player of the Year Jamal Cain. Tune in to ESPN+ at 8 p.m. to catch the action.
The Grizzlies hold the fifth highest chances of winning the tournament, with odds that vary from +500 at Caesars Sportsbook MI to +650 at FanDuel Sportsbook MI.
In their inaugural appearance in the finals, Oakland emerged as the runner-up in the 2021 tournament.
