Horse racing 2025 Triple Crown schedule
This year’s schedule features the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes, collectively known as the Triple Crown of horse racing.

Horse racing’s Triple Crown
Thoroughbred racing in the US is defined by three prestigious races held annually: the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes.
The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing consists of three races held annually between May and June, featuring the finest 3-year-old horses in the nation.
If a horse is capable of winning all three, it will forever be known as a Triple Crown winner.
- The Kentucky Derby, which marks the beginning of the Triple Crown, traditionally takes place on the initial Saturday of May at the iconic Churchill Downs racetrack in Kentucky. The race covers a distance of 1-1/4 miles.

- The Belmont Stakes, which marks the concluding stage of the Triple Crown, takes place in the first week of June at Belmont Park in New York on a 1.5-mile track.
Sir Barton, who triumphed in 1919, was the inaugural Triple Crown winner, a feat that only 13 horses have accomplished in a single season.
After Affirmed’s victory in 1978, a 37-year gap ensued before the next Triple Crown winner emerged. American Pharoah put an end to this drought by claiming the Triple Crown in 2015. Then, Justify achieved the same feat merely three years later, in 2018.
In the challenging Belmont, 23 horses have managed to clinch victory at both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, but unfortunately fell short of accomplishing the elusive Triple Crown.
Michigan horse racing history
After Michigan legalized pari-mutuel horse race betting during the summer of 1933, the state’s emerging horse racing sector quickly thrived.
On September 2, 1933, the inaugural race with authorized betting took place at the Detroit Fairgrounds Track. During the 1930s, the Detroit Fairgrounds remained the sole track in Michigan, until harness tracks were established in Northville and Jackson. Subsequently, in the 1940s, Hazel Park also commenced hosting thoroughbred racing.
In 1949, the inaugural Michigan Mile race took place at the Detroit Fairgrounds. However, this marked the track’s ultimate race as it was soon replaced by the new Detroit Race Course the following year. Both Hazel Park and the Detroit Fairgrounds hosted thoroughbred and harness racing meets.
Glendale Downs, a quarter horse track, was established in Hillsdale during the 1970s. Subsequently, in the 1980s, harness tracks were introduced in Saginaw, Swartz Creek, and Muskegon. Eventually, Glendale Downs shut down and was substituted by Mount Pleasant Meadows.
After operating as a dual-purpose track for thirty years, Hazel Park decided to focus solely on harness racing, while the Detroit Race Course transitioned to exclusively hosting thoroughbred races. However, a decade later, the Detroit Race Course shut down entirely, and Muskegon Downs also went out of business. Eventually, in the 1990s, Muskegon Downs reopened as Great Lakes Downs, becoming Michigan’s sole thoroughbred racetrack.
During the 2000s, Great Lakes Downs shut down and was subsequently replaced by Detroit’s Pinnacle Downs. However, the latter only operated for a year before closing its doors. Additionally, Jackson Raceway, Mount Pleasant Meadows, and Sports Creek also experienced closures during this period.
In 2015, Michigan had only two racetracks operating. One was Hazel Park, hosting thoroughbred racing, and the other was Northville Downs, specializing in harness racing.
In 2018, Hazel Park came to a close. Similarly, Northville Downs had intended to shut down in 2021 and transform the area into a housing development. Unfortunately, this plan hit a roadblock at Northville City Hall. As a result, Northville Downs recently declared that harness racing will persist at the track until 2025.
In the event that the redevelopment project proceeds, the Northville Downs’ operating company has declared intentions to construct a new track within the metro Detroit area.
In May 2020, due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, Northville Downs had to temporarily shut down. Concurrently, the Michigan Gaming Control Board declared that third-party facilitators of horse racing can now obtain a license to provide online advance deposit wagering services across the entire state.
The launch of legal and licensed online horse betting operators in the Michigan market, as stated by Executive Director Richard S. Kalm, will not only attract new followers to the state’s horse racing industry but also ensure the protection of individuals who wish to place bets on live and simulcast pari-mutuel racing through their mobile devices.
In June 2020, TVG became the pioneering online operator to launch with the state regulator.
