In January, sports betting in Michigan reached a plateau, with a recorded handle of $490.9 million.

In comparison to December’s $494.8 million, the figure for January 2022 is slightly lower by just under 1%. Additionally, there has been a significant decline of 7.8% from the previous year’s January figure of $532.7 million.

In comparison to the previous January’s all-time online handle record of $496.8 million, online sports betting generated $475.6 million, experiencing a decline of 4.3%.

Paul Costanzo, the lead analyst for Playinmichigan, expressed great anticipation for the January revenue release, especially regarding sports betting. He noted that this month was significant as Ohio was included in the data, allowing for a comparison to last year’s record-breaking January in terms of sports betting handle. While there was a 7% decrease in total handle compared to the previous year, this decline aligns with recent trends, although the impact of Ohio’s inclusion should not be disregarded.

Three takeaways from January Michigan sports betting revenue report

BetRivers Sportsbook MI sets record

BetRivers Sportsbook MI, unlike other operators experiencing a plateau in January, achieved a remarkable feat by setting a new online handle record.

BetRivers set a new record in January for online wagers with $11.14 million, surpassing the previous record of $10.8 million set in December.

BetRivers has experienced six months in a row of handle growth. With its impressive performance in January, BetRivers surpassed PointsBet to secure the sixth position in the state’s monthly handle rankings.

This marks the inaugural occasion where BetRivers has surpassed PointsBet Sportsbook in the handle race.

BetRivers is further delighted by the fact that the operator’s revenue of $643,116 marks a new monthly record.

PointsBet Michigan focused on sports betting

It is evident that PointsBet has established itself firmly in the realm of sportsbook operations.

PointsBet is the epitome of a stark contrast between online sportsbook performance and online casino performance.

PointsBet ranked seventh among the state’s 15 operators in January, with a total of $11.1 million in wagers handled.

PointsBet’s current standing aligns closely with its typical position. Throughout the course of Michigan’s history, PointsBet ranks sixth in terms of all-time handle, having accumulated $294.4 million in wagers.

Despite being operational since April 2022, Eagle Casino & Sports has surpassed PointsBet online casino in Michigan’s all-time revenue race with earnings of $21.8 million. Surprisingly, PointsBet online casino trails behind with a mere $17 million.

Michigan bettors bounce back in January

Michigan’s sportsbooks experienced a decrease in revenue, with a hold of 6.9% in January following a 10.2% hold in December.

The online hold experienced a small increase, reaching 7.1%.

The current hold represents a significant decrease from the 8.4% average that the state has maintained since the legalization of sports betting.

This is the state’s lowest rate since June of last year, when it was 5.4%.

Nevertheless, this achievement occurred during one of the least active months for betting in Michigan. Considering the fact that this figure was achieved in January, which is typically a high-volume month for wagering, it is indeed a significant victory for the state’s bettors.
