Michigan Lottery Continues Record Contributions
On Monday, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared the donation, marking the seventh consecutive year that the Michigan lottery has made an all-time high contribution to the School Aid Fund.
The School Aid Fund receives all profits from the lottery in accordance with state law.
In a statement, Whitmer expressed, “When the people of Michigan strive for victory, our students and schools reap the benefits as well. The Michigan Lottery’s unprecedented contribution to the School Aid Fund plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and in-person learning of our children, providing vital funding for K-12 programs, and guaranteeing that every family can access a top-notch public education. The Lottery’s exceptional performance over the past seven years has allowed us to prioritize the well-being of Michigan students. Together, we have bridged the funding gap between schools, increased per-student funding, and enhanced school facilities, all while keeping taxes unchanged. I extend my gratitude to all those who have made this significant investment in our children possible.”
In 2015, the contributions set a new record with an impressive amount of $795.5 million. This year, the contributions have reached an astounding $1.419 billion, nearly doubling the initial record.
The School Aid Fund has received lottery contributions for the past six years in the following amounts:
- 2020: $1.179 billion
- 2019: $1.070 billion
- 2018: $941.2 million
- 2017: $924.1 million
- 2016: $888.9 million
- 2015: $795.5 million
Since 1972, the Michigan Lottery has generated over $26 billion in funds for public education, with the most recent seven years accounting for over a quarter of that amount, specifically $7.2 billion.
Michigan Lottery has record year overall
The Michigan Lottery had an exceptional year in fiscal year 2021, resulting in a remarkable record contribution. Retailers were rewarded with an outstanding $370.9 million in commissions, contributing to this record-breaking achievement.
According to the release, the year saw record-breaking sales and prizes totaling more than $5 billion and $3.1 billion respectively. These exceptional figures were primarily attributed to the popularity of instant games, a massive $1 billion Mega Millions jackpot, and the successful utilization of the lottery’s online platform.
In Michigan, over 10,000 locations offer lottery products, with 925 retailers successfully selling $1 million or more worth of lottery games.
Lottery Commissioner Brian O. Neill expressed gratitude for the immense contribution made by Michigan’s schools and businesses through lottery purchases. He acknowledged that the remarkable outcomes achieved would not have been attainable without the active participation of players, retailers, vendors, the committed Lottery team, and the unwavering support received from the state government.
