As the holiday season approaches, the Michigan Lottery aims to alert customers about the presence of fraudulent individuals pretending to be lottery agents.
The Michigan Lotto issued a press release on Tuesday, reiterating their policy of processing prizes at no cost and emphasizing that without purchasing a ticket, one cannot be eligible to win any prizes.
The cautionary message arrives during the festive period, a time when scams tend to be abundant. Additionally, it coincides with recent news highlighting the significance of account security in online sportsbooks and casinos.
Michigan Lottery scam warnings
Scams revolving around prize-winning claims are not a novel occurrence. The Michigan Lottery has recently emphasized two such schemes that are frequently encountered.
- An individual is notified through a letter, email, text, or phone call that they have been selected as a winner of a lottery prize, but in order to claim the prize, they are required to make a payment.
- The scammer approaches an individual, impersonating a lottery winner, with the deceptive promise of sharing the prize money if the person sends them a certain amount of money.
If the individual consents in either situation, the scammer proceeds to persuade them into sending a cashier’s check, conducting an electronic funds transfer, or even organizing a face-to-face meeting for a cash transaction.
The longer the scam artist receives money, the more the scam will persist, as stated in the release notes.
Let me emphasize once again that in order to win any Michigan Lottery prize, you must have purchased a ticket. It is important to note that they will never request payment from you to claim your prize.

Online sportsbooks, casinos urge players to secure accounts
DraftKings recently disclosed that certain customers were encountering unusual activity with their accounts, and now, the Michigan Lottery has followed suit by issuing a release regarding this matter in a matter of weeks.

On November 21, 2022, DraftKings News tweeted.
Ensuring the security of your account is crucial due to the significant financial transactions and personal data associated with online sportsbooks and casinos.
It is highly recommended that customers create unique passwords for their accounts, despite the fact that most online gambling sites in Michigan employ two-factor authentication, which involves entering a code sent to your phone or email.
While the Michigan Gaming Control Board ensures consumer protections and safeguards for bettors in the state, it is still advisable to establish multiple layers of safeguards between oneself and potential malicious individuals to ensure maximum protection.
