Michigan surpasses $10 billion in sports betting handle

In March of 2025, Michigan achieved a remarkable milestone in the realm of sports betting.

Michigan’s all-time handle surpassed $10 billion as a result of the $421.7 million in wagers placed.

Since March 2020, when retail sports betting was initially permitted, the state has accumulated a total of $10,180,490,830 in wagers. Online sports betting, on the other hand, commenced in January 2021.

FanDuel widening the Michigan online sportsbook gap

In the race for the top spot among Michigan online sportsbooks, FanDuel has maintained a solid hold. However, their dominance appears to be strengthening even further in 2025.

In March, FanDuel sportsbook dominated the market with a staggering $146.8 million in online handle, representing 36% of the total share in the state. DraftKings trailed behind with a distant second place, holding only 25% of the share at $101.2 million.

In a given month, the $45.6 million disparity between the top two Michigan online sportsbooks is the biggest ever.

FanDuel remains the clear frontrunner in Michigan’s online sportsbook revenue competition, maintaining its dominance. In March, the Michigan sportsbook garnered a substantial $20.1 million, constituting an impressive 45% of the state’s overall online revenue.

FanDuel has achieved $310.4 million in revenue since the introduction of online sports betting in January 2021, representing 39.2% of the total online sports betting revenue in the state, which stands at $792.6 million.

Online handle down in 2025, online revenue way up

Throughout 2022, retail sports betting displayed signs of decline, whereas online sports betting appeared to be reaching a plateau.

Online sports betting is showing signs of a slight decline in wagering in 2025.

Michigan’s handle for the first quarter of 2025 reached $1.23 billion, marking an 8.9% decline from the $1.35 billion wagered in Q1 of 2022.

Despite the decline in overall betting, the online sportsbooks are projected to generate higher revenue in 2025.

In the first quarter of 2025, online sportsbooks in Michigan generated a revenue of $100.9 million, marking a 15.1% increase compared to the same period in 2022 ($87.7 million). Furthermore, March alone witnessed a revenue of $44.6 million, which stands as the fifth-highest monthly total ever recorded in Michigan.
