Online sports betting increased 2.8% over September of 2021, not as much as expected; online casinos down slightly from August, but still going strong

In September, Michigan sportsbooks experienced a surge in activity with the arrival of a new football season, resulting in a total sports betting handle of $383.1 million. This marked a significant 66.7% rise compared to August figures, although it represented a marginal decrease of less than 1% in comparison to September 2021.

Revenue from Michigan online casinos and poker experienced a slight decline compared to the previous month, with a decrease of 1.7% from $130.9 million in August to $128.7 million in September.

Paul Costanzo, lead analyst at Playinmichigan, stated that the return of football had a significant impact on Michigan sportsbooks, resulting in their highest month since April. However, he expressed surprise over the slight decrease of 1% in the overall handle compared to the previous year. Although online sports betting experienced a 2.8% growth year over year, the expectations were higher. Costanzo noted the consistent and positive revenue numbers from online casinos, which is expected to continue throughout the autumn due to cross-promotions and the presence of sports bettors on the apps. He also mentioned that the additional revenue from online partnerships is greatly appreciated by the Detroit casinos, especially with the recent decline in their retail numbers.

Top takeaways from September 2022 Michigan online gambling numbers

Retail sports betting leads to overall dip

Although September saw a significant increase in sports betting handle compared to August, the total amount of $383.1 million fell just below a 1% decrease from the total of $386.8 million in 2021.

Retail casinos were the cause of the decline, with the three Detroit casinos generating only $18.6 million in handle last month. This marked a significant decrease of 42.9% compared to the $32.5 million generated in September 2021.

Last month, the online sports betting handle witnessed a 2.8% increase, reaching $364.5 million, compared to $354.3 million recorded a year ago.

The initial estimates anticipated a handle of over $400 million for Michigan this month. Although subsequent months might witness a decrease in these estimates, they are still expected to surpass $500 million, marking Michigan’s first month achieving this milestone.

DraftKings lands on top

In September, FanDuel/MotorCity Casino emerged as the winner of the overall handle race, securing $110.4 million. However, DraftKings claimed the top spot for online handle with $108.2 million during the same period.

The mark accounted for 29.67% of the market share, slightly surpassing FanDuel, which ended at 29.17%.

DraftKings has secured the top position in online sports betting handle for the first time since December 2021.

As of now, FanDuel maintains a comfortable lead in the overall share with 28.44%, whereas DraftKings currently holds a share of 25.39%.

Another quarterly online casino revenue record

Total adjusted gross receipts have consistently risen every quarter since the legalization of online casinos in January 2021.

As Q3 of 2022 comes to an end, a new record has been achieved. The combined AGR for the months of June through September reached $350,484,700, marking a 2.1% increase compared to the previous record set in Q2 of this year.

  • The total amount for Q1 2021 (commencing in mid-January) is $191,438,595.
  • Q2 2021: $244,126,239
  • Q3 2021: $262,954,196
  • Q4 2021: $304,934,730
  • Q1 2022: $338,313,034
  • Q2 2022: $343,422,276

The ongoing expansion serves as evidence that, despite a slight decrease in retail figures, the total earnings of casinos from both commercial and online gambling are reaching unprecedented levels.
