Michigan residents have a wide array of options for online gambling, with 14 internet gaming and sports betting brands currently available in the state and an additional 15th brand soon to be launched.
However, there are still numerous platforms that are unable to accept bets in the state of Great Lakes.
In December 2019, the revised gambling laws in Michigan were enacted, which introduced a restriction on the number of licenses granted to casino operators. These licenses were exclusively offered to the 12 Native American tribes recognized by the federal government within the state, along with the three existing casinos in Detroit.
One online sports betting brand, one online casino brand, and one online poker brand could be licensed by each operator. This resulted in the creation of 15 brands, as each sports betting brand in Michigan is associated with a Michigan online casino through the same partnership.
Could new sports betting apps ever come to Michigan?
The state grants operator and supplier licenses for a duration of five years.
According to a spokesperson from the Michigan Gaming Control Board, licenses may be re-issued by operators based on their contractual agreement with the platform provider. There is a possibility of consolidation in the future, as Fox Bet Sportsbook is relatively small in the Michigan sports betting market compared to the highly successful FanDuel, which is also a Flutter brand.
The availability of fifteen licenses has significantly fueled the market’s growth and attracted both consumers and businesses. However, if additional licenses were made accessible, numerous operators would undoubtedly be eager to seize the opportunity.
These individuals could potentially be considered as candidates.
Bally Bet
You may be familiar with Bally Sports Detroit, and perhaps you are also aware that Bally’s is a renowned hotel brand situated on the Las Vegas Strip.
Bally’s has a strong desire to introduce Bally Bet to Michigan sports fans who are already familiar with the brand.
Bally’s online casino capabilities are expected to increase following the recent acquisition of iGaming operator Gamesys Group.
Bally Bets has already launched in the states of Colorado and Iowa.
bet365
Bet365, one of the largest gambling brands in Europe, is currently operating in New Jersey as well.
In an alternate universe, bet365, a highly acclaimed sports betting platform recognized by industry experts, displayed a greater level of assertiveness in expanding its presence across various states, including Michigan.
At present, reality has not manifested itself, but it is not impossible for that day to arrive.
Circa Sports
It’s evident that Derek Stevens, a resident of Detroit, has a strong desire to introduce his platform to his home state.
Stevens and his brother, Greg, have successfully established a thriving casino empire in the heart of Las Vegas. Their latest achievement is the grand Circa Sports resort, which stands tall as their newest addition (depicted in the image above).
The brand’s expansion now includes online sports betting, with new locations in Nevada and Colorado.
MaximBet
Did you happen to read Maxim magazine during your college years, or am I the only one who did?
MaximBet is the new name of SportsBetting.com in Colorado, and it may soon expand its presence to Indiana, Iowa, and New Jersey.
The men’s lifestyle brand appears to be a suitable choice for the sports betting demographic. However, it is evident that Maxim no longer holds the same level of reputation as it did during my dorm room days.
SI Sportsbook
Sports enthusiasts are deeply connected to the legendary Sports Illustrated magazine brand, which is now venturing into the sports betting industry.
SI Sportsbook has officially launched in Colorado, marking its entry as the 26th sports betting app in the state, in collaboration with 888Sport.
Similar to Maxim, the former magazine brand still retains some level of visibility, although it pales in comparison to its previous glory days.
SuperBook (from Westgate)
The SuperContest holds a prominent position among handicapping events during the NFL season. Every week, participants carefully select five games, considering the spread, to compete for the ultimate winner-takes-all rewards.
Even though representatives from Westgate SuperBook have been featured on Michigan sports radio for several years, unfortunately, you are still unable to place bets with them directly in the state. However, there is an alternative option available – you can utilize a proxy service to place bets on-site at the SuperContest.
You can access the online sportsbook in Colorado, Nevada, and New Jersey.
Tipico
Gannett, the renowned news media company, has established a promotional partnership with Tipico, resulting in increased brand exposure among readers of Detroit Free Press, Lansing State Journal, and Port Huron Times Herald. Additionally, visitors to freep.com and detnews.com are also becoming more acquainted with the Tipico brand.
Currently, having awareness about Tipico is of no value in Michigan since it is only operational in Colorado and New Jersey.
According to the company’s website, upcoming launches in Indiana and Iowa are imminent, while Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania have been identified as other states where the company plans to expand.
