Lots of options available for Detroit
Mock drafts have connected numerous names to the Detroit Lions in the past few months.

- The over/under for OT Penei Sewell is set at 5.5, with the over being favored at (-134) and the under at (+108).

- The over/under for WR Ja’Marr Chase is set at 6.5, with the over at +120 and the under at -150.
- According to the odds, CB Patrick Surtain II has an over/under of 10.5 with the over being favored at -112 and the under also at -112.
- LB Micah Parsons: The line for his total number of tackles is set at 11.5. The odds for going over this mark are -112, while the odds for going under are also -112.
- The over/under for WR DaVonta Smith is set at 11.5. Betting on the over has odds of -104, while betting on the under has odds of -121.
- Jaylen Waddle’s projected total: 11.5. If you believe he will have more than 11.5, you can bet on the Over (-125). On the other hand, if you think he will have less than 11.5, you can bet on the Under (+101).
Lions address some offseason needs
In 2021, the Detroit Lions will showcase a noticeably transformed appearance.
Brad Holmes has taken on the role of general manager for the team, while former Lion Dan Campbell is leading the new coaching staff.
The roster has undergone a significant transformation.
The Los Angeles Rams acquired Matthew Stafford, a franchise quarterback, in exchange for Jared Goff and three draft picks.
Many starters, such as Justin Coleman, Jamal Agnew, Jarrad Davis, Danny Shelton, Marvin Jones, Matt Prater, Desmond Trufant, and Kenny Golladay, have been let go by Detroit.
After his impressive 10-sack season in 2020, the team made the decision to extend a new 3-year contract to young defensive end Romeo Okwara.
In addition, the Lions made a trade by giving away a seventh-round pick from the 2025 draft in return for defensive tackle Michael Brockers. They further modified his contract to enhance the development of their defensive line.
The Lions made only one multiyear contract signing for free agents, with former Packers running back Jamaal Williams agreeing to a two-year deal.
Early trades shake up 2021 NFL Draft
The Detroit Lions’ selection at No. 7 could potentially be influenced by a couple of significant trades involving first-round picks that occurred last month.
In the initial trade, the Miami Dolphins relinquished their No. 3 pick to the San Francisco 49ers. In return, the 49ers offered Miami their No. 12 pick, a 2021 third-round selection, and first-round picks in 2022 and 2025, enabling them to secure the No. 3 spot.
There is a belief that the 49ers have their sights set on Alabama QB Mac Jones for the third overall pick. According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Jones’ Over/Under Draft Position is set at 3.5, with the odds favoring the under at -270.
The Dolphins swiftly moved away from the No. 12 spot, opting to trade it along with a 2021 fourth-round selection and a 2022 first-round pick to secure a higher position at No. 6. In return, the Philadelphia Eagles surrendered their No. 6 pick and also included a fifth-round pick in the exchange.
Leading up to the draft, numerous mock drafts are connecting Pitts to the Dolphins with the 6th overall pick.
How does all this affect the Detroit Lions?
Mock drafts commonly predict that quarterbacks will be chosen with the first four picks. Trevor Lawrence is widely expected to be selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars as the first overall pick. Zach Wilson, Mac Jones, and Justin Fields are commonly projected to be picked at numbers 2-4, although the specific order may vary.
The presence of Trey Lance, who is still available, may prompt the Lions to consider trading down. The Washington Football Team or Denver Broncos might be interested in trading up to secure the promising North Dakota State prospect.
Many mock drafts connect Detroit to a receiver, however, the majority of these receivers are not deserving of the No. 7 pick.
Chase is widely regarded as the most talented individual in the class and holds the highest chances of being the first wide receiver selected, with odds of -625 according to DraftKings. Smith (+600) and Waddle (+700) trail behind him in the rankings.
Following the departures of Jones and Golladay, Detroit finds itself in dire need of a receiver. Although they managed to acquire Tyrell Williams and Breshad Perriman through free agency on one-year contracts, neither player possesses the qualities of a primary receiving option.
Three likely options at No. 7
Assuming Detroit holds the No. 7 spot, the presence of quarterbacks being chosen at Nos. 1-4 presents an advantageous situation for the team. Considering the odds for the 2021 NFL Draft, it appears that Sewell, Pitts, Lance, and Chase are the probable choices for the following three picks.
Despite facing criticism for selecting another tight end so high after T.J. Hockenson in 2019, Detroit’s decision seems justified considering Pitts’ exceptional physical attributes. With his towering height of 6-foot-6 and weight of 245 pounds, Pitts impressively clocked a 4.44-second 40-yard dash and boasted a remarkable wingspan exceeding 83 inches, indicating his extraordinary talent that appears to be a rarity.
Without a doubt, Sewell is the premier lineman in the draft. His chances of being the first lineman chosen stand at -715. If Detroit decides to select him, they would probably need to shift him to the right tackle position since Taylor Decker already has a firm hold on the starting left tackle spot.
If the Lions decide to remain at their current position, it appears that Ja’Marr Chase, the 6-foot receiver from LSU, is the most probable outcome considering all available information.
