During the August 18 raids in Flint, alleged storefront casinos were targeted resulting in the seizure of 67 devices and $10,141 in suspected gambling earnings and gift cards.
During the raids conducted at The Cellular Vault and Cellular Bank, state investigators seized a total of 11 video slot machines, 56 computers suspected to be utilized for illegal gambling, and the accompanying cash.
On Tuesday, the Michigan Gaming Control Board made an official announcement regarding the raids in a press release. These raids were conducted as a collaborative effort between the Michigan Department of Attorney General and the MGCB.
State investigators raid two alleged Flint storefront casinos
In the release, the MGCB identified the two stores as “freestanding businesses”. The specific locations are 3301 Corunna Road for Cellular Vault and 4622 Saginaw St. for Cellular Bank, both situated in Flint.
Cellular Vault had a total of 39 computers dedicated to slot-style games. On the other hand, Cellular Bank had 11 standalone slot machines and an additional 13 computers used for slot-style games. Furthermore, Cellular Bank offered its customers a card with a PIN, enabling them to place bets online from places outside the bank, like their homes.
MBCB Executive Director Henry Williams expressed gratitude to the public for their assistance in uncovering potential illegal gambling activities at both Flint locations. Williams emphasized that alleged storefront casinos lack the necessary consumer protections mandated for legal and regulated gambling. These operations can also attract various criminal activities to the nearby neighborhoods.
April investigation of alleged storefront casinos still open
In April of this year, authorities confiscated a total of 100 gambling devices and suspected gambling earnings amounting to $29,200 from purported storefront casinos located in Davison and Burton.
Both the State Road Spot in Davison and The Bristol Spot in Burton are currently being investigated.
Michigan citizens are urged to contact the MGCB’s 24-hour, anonymous tip line at (888) 314-2682 to report any suspicious or unlawful gambling activities. The MGCB also releases informative fact sheets on Michigan law and unregulated machines associated with illegal gambling.
