The BetMGM Online Series in Michigan came to an end on Sunday, marking the first significant tournament series at BetMGM Poker. Overall, the outcomes of the series were a combination of successes and setbacks.
The total guaranteed prize pools for the 10 tournaments amounted to $300,000. However, the players ended up winning slightly over $360,000. Interestingly, while half of the tournaments surpassed their guarantees, the other half fell short. It is worth noting that the tournaments that fell short had relatively small differences between the guaranteed amount and the actual winnings.
Slow start, fast finish for first BetMGM Poker Online Series in MI
In general, the series had a slow start but managed to finish strongly. The eight-day schedule began and concluded with two contrasting Sundays. The initial Sunday was somewhat disappointing, but the turnouts on the last Sunday greatly contributed to the overall recovery of the series.
On the initial Sunday, April 18th, the series commenced with a superimposition. Despite drawing in a respectable total of 339 participants, the $215 Sunday Special event fell short by 36 entries from reaching its $75,000 target. As a result, a substantial overlay of $7,200 was generated, marking the most substantial one throughout the entire series.
On the final Sunday, April 25th, all three events surpassed their guarantees.
With 519 entries, the $20 “Mini” surpassed expectations by generating a prize pool of over $9,600, almost doubling the guaranteed amount of $5,000. The $109 Sunday 1/2 Price also performed exceptionally, with 501 entries contributing to a prize pool of $50,100, which was two-and-a-half times higher than the guaranteed $20,000.
The grand finale of the series, known as the Sunday Special, surpassed all expectations by hosting the highest buy-in and prize pool of the entire event. Priced at $535, a remarkable 217 participants joined, resulting in an impressive prize pool of $108,500. This outstanding sum exceeded the initial guarantee of $100,000.
The final event of the series fell just short of matching the record for the biggest tournament in the history of BetMGM Poker MI.
Earlier this month, the BetMGM Grand Online Main Event witnessed 1,130 participants, generating an impressive prize pool of $113,000.

Expectations met, but BetMGM Poker still behind PokerStars
Despite meeting most expectations, BetMGM Poker MI’s initial online series fell short in terms of ambition and scale compared to PokerStars MI’s inaugural major tournament series, the Michigan Championship of Online Poker (MICOOP).
The MICOOP, which took place shortly after the launch of PokerStars MI in late January, included a whopping 60 events. Initially, the guarantees for these events amounted to $1 million, but due to overwhelming participation, PokerStars decided to raise the guarantees for subsequent events. In the end, players raked in over $2.2 million in winnings during the MICOOP.
BetMGM Poker MI is currently in its second month of dealing virtual hands, while PokerStars MI had a head start of two months, making it the dominant player in Michigan’s emerging online poker market.
As additional tournament series are on the horizon, the BetMGM Poker lion is expected to maintain its powerful presence as it strives to rival PokerStars’ dominant position in MI.
