In an effort to surpass the .500 mark, Central Michigan is set to face the Toledo Rockets for their homecoming game on Saturday. The Chippewas secured their initial Mid-American Conference win of 2021 by narrowly defeating the Ohio Bobcats 30-27 in their previous matchup.
Are the odds in favor of Central staying strong and achieving two consecutive wins? It seems that the oddsmakers at Michigan sportsbooks have their doubts.

Central Michigan spoils Ohio’s homecoming
After securing a victory against Akron on October 2nd, the Ohio Bobcats unfortunately experienced a disheartening homecoming defeat against Central Michigan with a score of 30-27.
Lew Nichols III scored the first touchdown for Central with a 3-yard run. The running back had an outstanding game, carrying the ball 30 times for 186 yards and a touchdown. He also made three receptions for 24 yards. This performance marked his highest rushing yardage of the season, surpassing his previous record of 196 yards against Eastern Michigan in 2020, during a 31-23 victory.
Nichols III, who has achieved more than 100 yards in three distinct games (135, 152) including at Ohio, currently holds the top spot in the MAC with 591 rushing yards.
In the beginning, Daniel Richardson, a freshman quarterback, was the only one throwing the ball for the Chips. However, in Weeks 1, 2, and 3, Jacob Sirmon, a sophomore, took on the majority of the snaps. Eventually, in Week 4, the workload was divided between the two quarterbacks when they played against Florida International. In Week 5, Richardson had 41 attempts while Sirmon only had eight against the RedHawks.
Richardson dominated the Bobcats game, completing 16 out of 30 passes for 257 yards, contributing one touchdown and unfortunately experiencing two interceptions.
In the game, Dallas Dixon made a total of four receptions, accumulating 91 yards. On the other hand, Kalil Pimpleton managed to catch five passes, resulting in 78 yards, including the crucial touchdown in the final moments of the fourth quarter.
After Pimpleton’s score, the defense stepped up and compelled the Bobcats to a three-and-out. This advantageous situation allowed the Chippewas to control the clock and secure the victory.
Failed two-point conversion, late field goal seal Toledo’s fate
Similar to the Chippewas, the Rockets are aiming to surpass a .500 record following their challenging defeat of 22-20 against Northern Illinois in the previous week.
A total of six lead changes took place during the game. With less than four minutes remaining, Toledo managed to score a go-ahead touchdown, putting them ahead 20-19. However, their attempt at a two-point conversion was unsuccessful.
With just 26 seconds left, the Huskies successfully arranged the game-winning field goal by John Richardson.
Toledo once again employed a dual-quarterback strategy. Dequan Finn, a freshman, had a solid performance, completing 10 of 17 passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, sophomore Carter Bradley managed to connect on 6 of his 14 passes, accumulating 50 yards.
Bryant Koback, the junior running back, showcased his versatility as he dominated the team in both rushing and receiving yards. Carrying the ball 12 times, he accumulated an impressive 91 yards and scored a touchdown. Additionally, he displayed his skills as a receiver by catching two passes for an outstanding 85 yards and another touchdown.
Devin Maddox successfully received five passes, accumulating a total of 34 yards and ultimately scoring a touchdown.
Toledo looks good on the road
In their previous five road games, the Rockets have achieved a flawless 5-0 record against the spread. Conversely, the Chippewas have struggled, going 0-4 ATS in their last four games.
Toledo has been the dominant force in the overall series, leading with a record of 26 wins, 17 losses, and 3 ties. In their encounter in 2020, the Rockets managed to secure a narrow 24-23 victory.
In 2019, the Chippewas dominated the Rockets with a resounding 49-7 victory. However, prior to that, Central had not emerged victorious against Toledo since 2009.
On Saturday, Central Michigan will commemorate homecoming week and its hall of fame game, paying tribute to Joe Staley, a former offensive lineman who achieved great success with the team. Staley not only earned a MAC championship and contributed to the team’s inaugural bowl victory but also went on to have a remarkable professional career with the San Francisco 49ers.
