Despite Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s recent announcement of further relaxation of state restrictions, the three commercial casinos in Detroit remain on the awaiting roster.
A number of Michigan casinos have resumed operations, with ten out of the state’s 23 tribal casinos reopening this week. While several other casinos are also preparing to welcome guests again, the Detroit casinos are still awaiting permission to reopen.
On Monday, Whitmer made the announcement that starting from June 8, Michigan will move into Phase 4. This will enable bars and restaurants across the state to reopen with a 50% capacity as part of the ongoing recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Regrettably, Detroit’s commercial casinos find that inadequate.
- The hotel-casino located in Greektown
- The MGM Grand Detroit
- The casino in MotorCity.
Whitmer’s orders have led to the closure of the three casinos since March 16.
Gov. Whitmer says July 4 possible for Phase 5
The Detroit News reported that the Michigan governor hinted at the possibility of upcoming relaxed restrictions during Monday’s press conference.
Assuming that the current path remains unchanged, it is my expectation that within the upcoming weeks, we will be in a position to declare that the remaining regions will transition to Phase 5.
Before July 4, the governor expressed her desire for the state to transition to Phase 5, also known as the “containing” phase.
It is presumed that Michigan casinos will be allowed to reopen at the phase level, although they are not explicitly mentioned in Whitmer’s phased plans.
Whitmer made inclusions for bars and restaurants to be included in Phase 4, the “improving” phase, despite originally being listed for Phase 5.
Detroit casinos have all announced safety plans
MotorCity Casino unveiled its reopening plan on Tuesday, following in the footsteps of its two city counterparts who had already announced their safety plans.
The plan successfully covered all the important aspects that have already received considerable attention throughout the country, with a specific focus on the following areas:
- Cleanliness
- Screening
- Social distancing refers to the practice of maintaining physical distance between individuals in order to reduce the spread of infectious diseases.
- PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment.
MGM Resorts recently made an announcement regarding their Seven-Point Safety Plan for reopening. Furthermore, the parent company of Greektown, Penn National Gaming, has previously released national guidelines for the reopening of its facilities.
Closures have vast economic impact on city, state
According to recent estimates released by the city of Detroit, the closure of casinos is resulting in a daily loss of $600,000 for their financial reserves. Based on these estimates, the city is projected to face a total deficit of $112 million by the upcoming summer.
In 2019, the casinos accumulated adjusted gross receipts amounting to $1.45 billion. As a result, the city received over $184 million through a wagering tax at a rate of 10.9%.
In 2019, Detroit casinos contributed over $117 million to the state of Michigan.
The first and crucial step towards the recovery of casinos from the financial impact caused by the global pandemic is to open by July 4.
Coronavirus numbers improving in Michigan
As of Monday afternoon, Michigan had reported 5,516 deaths, making it one of the states most severely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
Nonetheless, the positive trend in the state persists as 25 new deaths were reported on Monday.
Whitmer mentioned that the ongoing improvement in our numbers brings about a sense of optimism. Although nobody desires to regress, she acknowledged the possibility of having to do so if we observe an increase in cases.
