Despite the closure of the three casinos in Detroit since November 18, the total amount wagered in sports betting surpassed $25 million this November.

In October, there was a decrease in the number of bets placed in the city compared to the previous record month, which saw over $46 million wagered. Michigan sports betting has been continuously breaking records for the past three months, and since its launch in March, it has surpassed $100 million in bets.

Following the health department’s recent directives, Greektown Casino, MGM Grand Detroit, and MotorCity Casino will remain closed until at least December 20th.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board anticipates the upcoming launch of online gambling, which will include mobile sports betting. Relief may be on the horizon, as this development is expected to occur next month. Stay tuned to our live updates for the most recent information.

Michigan sports betting missed holiday haul

In November, the casinos’ sports betting activity resulted in over $2.3 million in adjusted gross receipts. This brought in more than $88,000 in state taxes and nearly $108,000 in city taxes for the city of Detroit.

In November, MGM took the lead in sports betting handle with an impressive $10.5 million, capturing 42.0% of the market share. Following closely behind was MotorCity with a handle of $8.3 million, accounting for a 33.2% share. Greektown secured $6.2 million in sports bets, acquiring a 24.8% share.

The permanent opening of the Barstool Sportsbook at Greektown, which was scheduled for November, has been postponed.

During each of November’s 17 gaming days, the casinos accumulated over $1.4 million in sports wagers. This rate would have resulted in an overall November figure that closely matched the record-breaking outcome achieved in October.

Since its launch on March 11, the sports betting industry in Detroit has witnessed a staggering $121 million in wagers throughout the year. The casinos’ retail sportsbooks have generated a substantial revenue of approximately $16.4 million, contributing over $619,000 in taxes to the state and an additional $757,000 to the city of Detroit.

Not being open in late November resulted in the absence of the holiday rush during Thanksgiving and Black Friday. It also meant missing out on the bets placed on the Detroit Lions’ annual Thanksgiving game, which is one of the few occasions when the struggling franchise gains national attention.

More sports betting options available, on the way

Despite the Detroit shutdown, numerous tribal casinos such as FireKeepers Casino in Battle Creek continue to operate their sportsbooks without the need for public reporting or state taxes.

In November, the Detroit casinos collectively generated $50.4 million in revenue. From January through November 30, the combined revenue from table games and slots witnessed a decline of 54.9% compared to the same period in 2019.

In November, MGM emerged as the market leader, generating $20.5 million in gaming revenue. MotorCity closely followed with $17.5 million, while Greektown secured the third spot with $10.1 million.

Breaking news: Fantasy sports contest operators have announced that their total adjusted revenues for October reached $2.2 million, resulting in tax payments of $183,236. This milestone marks the first time they have surpassed the $1 million mark in taxes paid for the year since the implementation of expanded gambling laws in December 2019.

Once again, DraftKings has managed to stay ahead of its rival FanDuel, recording $1.3 million in adjusted revenue compared to FanDuel’s $825,502.82.
