Even though Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has lifted the mask mandate for fully vaccinated residents, most Michigan casinos still require masks, although the situation is evolving daily.

Although the ban has been lifted in Detroit, Greektown Casino, MGM Grand Detroit, and MotorCity Casino have yet to announce any updates to their policies.

The mask mandates at Michigan’s 23 tribal casinos are being lifted as they begin announcing the change. The following list highlights those casinos where wearing a mask is no longer necessary for individuals who are fully vaccinated:

  • Battle Creek’s FireKeepers Casino
  • The casinos of Four Winds are located in Dowagiac, Hartford, and New Buffalo.
  • Peshawbestown, home to Leelanau Sands
  • Manistee’s Little River Casino
  • The Odawa Casinos in Petoskey and Mackinaw City
  • The location known as Standish is home to Saganing Eagles Landing.
  • Mount Pleasant is home to the majestic Soaring Eagle.
  • Williamsburg’s Turtle Creek.

Whitmer made her announcement this month, following the recent updates by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Effective last week morning, individuals were no longer required to wear masks while outdoors, and fully vaccinated individuals were permitted to go maskless indoors.

Nevertheless, local, state, and tribal laws, rules, and regulations have the authority to supersede the unmasking policy, taking into account local business and workplace guidelines.

Michigan board’s guidelines for casinos adjusted Monday

Regulations for the Detroit casinos are overseen by the Michigan Gaming Control Board.

Starting from Monday, fully vaccinated individuals are no longer required to wear masks as per the updated order.

The order mandates that casinos must exert a “good-faith effort” in enforcing the mask mandate for unvaccinated individuals. This effort can be demonstrated through various methods, such as displaying signage, inquiring about exceptions for those not wearing masks, persisting in the requirement of masks, or implementing similar policies aimed at ensuring compliance.

According to Mary Kay Bean, a spokesperson for MGCB, it is up to casino management to decide whether or not to maintain the mask requirement.

No Upper Peninsula casinos have yet lifted mask mandates

While no Upper Peninsula casino has fully lifted its mask mandate, Ojibwa Casinos in Baraga and Marquette, as well as Island Resort in Harris, do not require masks to be worn while seated at a slot machine.

The mandate at Kewadin Casinos, a group of five casinos located in Michigan’s U.P., remains in effect.

In their statement, they express their happiness about the positive outcomes of their efforts and the effectiveness of the vaccines. They eagerly anticipate seeing the joyful expressions on their patrons’ faces once again. Nonetheless, they maintain their present mask requirement policy at all Kewadin Casinos. They plan to wait for health officials to thoroughly assess the situation and formulate revised guidelines that ensure the safety of their team members, customers, and communities. They promise to communicate any updates with their valued patrons.

The policy of Bay Mills Casino in Brimley is currently under review, as announced by the casino.

A statement read, expressing our delight at the recent updates from the CDC and Governor Whitmer regarding the removal of mask requirements for vaccinated individuals. We acknowledge the challenging period we have all endured and are thrilled that a return to our regular lives may be imminent.

Nevertheless, due to the lack of sufficient notice accompanying the announcements, the team at Bay Mills has not been granted ample time to thoroughly examine the recently introduced guidelines.

Currently, we will continue enforcing our existing policy which mandates masks for all visitors on the premises. We will uphold this policy until we are able to establish and follow a framework that aligns with the latest guidelines from the CDC.

As more details emerge, Playinmichigan will provide regular updates on this story in the upcoming days.
