DraftKings faces a lawsuit from a resident of Michigan who alleges that his sports bet turned out unfavorably.
According to a report from The Detroit News, Ryan Cristman of Walled Lake has recently taken legal action against the betting operator. His lawyers filed a lawsuit on Wednesday, claiming that he should have received over $5,000 in winnings due to a glitch that allowed him to place a lucrative value bet.
According to Cristman’s lawyer, the lawsuit is anticipated to transform into a class-action suit and aims to secure damages exceeding $5 million, as reported by the News.
Playinmichigan contacted a DraftKings representative, but they have not yet provided a response. This legal action marks the first known lawsuit filed by a bettor against a Michigan online sports betting operator.
Lawsuit: Walled Lake man had Bruins +3 in February game
According to the lawsuit, Cristman placed a wager on February 10th through DraftKings Sportsbook. The bet was on the Boston Bruins, with a puck line of three goals against the New York Rangers.
According to the lawsuit, Cristman placed a bet of $915.89 with odds of +510, aiming for a payout of $5,586.93. If successful, this would result in a net profit of $4,671.04.
Included in the lawsuit (provided below) are a screenshot of the purported bet and exchanges with a customer service representative, who extends well wishes to Cristman ahead of the game.
However, while the game was in progress, Cristman alleges that his bet was changed in his account to Bruins -3. The original bet had been placed on the regulation result, which turned out to be a 2-2 tie. Ultimately, the Bruins emerged victorious with a score of 3-2.
Cristman asserts that his bet was recorded as a defeat.
According to the lawsuit, he contacted customer service once more while the game was ongoing and was subsequently informed afterwards that his loss would be upheld.
According to a response from DraftKings, a screenshot reveals that the initial wager has been credited, accompanied by a complimentary $50 bet.
According to the lawsuit, the account was later locked for several days. DraftKings then provided Cristman with an additional two free bets worth $50 each.
A lawsuit against DraftKings in Michigan was filed in May 2021.
Lawyer: More DraftKings complaints are coming forward
Ari Scharg, a lawyer from the Edelson PC firm, revealed to the News that they are currently investigating the entire industry. He expressed his intention to bring the DraftKings case before a jury and mentioned that additional DraftKings users have come forward with similar experiences.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board refrains from providing comments on ongoing litigation; however, it does offer a Patron Dispute Form on its website.
The mentioned bet occurred 19 days subsequent to the initiation of online sports betting in Michigan.
As of April, DraftKings has received a total of $239.2 million in online sports bets in Michigan, ranking third among all operators.
