History of Greektown Casino
The majority ownership of Greektown Casino was acquired by the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and it was established in 2000. Construction for the hotel began in 2006 and in 2009, it was officially opened, accompanying the casino.
The casino hotel was acquired by two investor groups, Greektown Superholding, Inc. and Greektown Newco Sub Inc., in 2008 following the bankruptcy filing of the Sault St. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.
In January 2013, Dan Gilbert’s Rock Gaming company made a deal to acquire a controlling interest in Greektown Casino Hotel. Subsequently, Rock Gaming underwent a rebranding as Jack Entertainment, with the intention of renaming Greektown as “Jack Detroit Casino-Hotel Greektown” in 2016. Unfortunately, these plans were abandoned in March 2018 when Gilbert decided to sell the casino for a staggering $1 billion.
Jack Entertainment sold Greektown to Vici Properties and Penn National Gaming in May 2019.
