With Matthew Stafford’s departure, the Detroit Lions now have a new coach and general manager in place. Consequently, it is reasonable to anticipate a low win total for the team in 2021.
… But is it really this low?
The NFL team, which has never made it to the Super Bowl and has been trying to win its first division title since 1993, will probably have to wait for another year. This conclusion can be drawn from the recently released spring NFL wins totals lists by most of the online sportsbooks in Michigan.
Detroit Lions among NFL’s lowest win totals
There’s no sugarcoating it – the Lions, led by new head coach Dan Campbell and newly-arrived quarterback Jared Goff, are expected to perform poorly.
The Lions’ season totals as of Friday afternoon are presented in the following market projection.
DraftKings Sportsbook offers a line of Over/Under 5 wins for a specific event. The over bet has odds of +100, while the under bet has odds of -121.
Although FanDuel Sportsbook does not provide specific victory totals, they offer favorable odds of +2700 for winning the NFC North.
The BetMGM Sportsbook offers an Over/Under bet of 5 wins with -110 odds for both outcomes. Additionally, there are -900 odds for the team to not make the playoffs, and +600 odds for the team to make the playoffs.
The PointsBet Sportsbook offers an Over/Under of 5 wins. The odds for the Over are +100, while the Under is -120.
The William Hill Sportsbook sets the Over/Under for wins at 5, with the Over option having odds of -140 and the Under option having odds of +120.
According to the Fox Bet Sportsbook, the projected win total for a certain team is set at 5.5. If you believe the team will win more than 5.5 games, you can bet on the “over” option with odds of +135. On the other hand, if you think they will win fewer than 5.5 games, you can bet on the “under” option with odds of -175.
Just how bad could it be for Jared Goff & Co.?
We will refrain from excessive criticism, but you understand the point. Just to provide some context, the Lions rank second to last in terms of market win total among all 32 NFL teams listed at DraftKings. The Houston Texans are the only team with a lower benchmark, sitting at 4.5 wins.
PointsBet has a similar story to the Lions, as they also find themselves in the second-worst position. Similarly, the Texans are set at a 4.5-win mark.
Also, keep in mind that these statistics are calculated with the inclusion of an additional regular-season game this year. It is worth noting that the NFL will be implementing a 17-game schedule for the first time.
The projected record for the Detroit Lions this season, based on their win total of five, is 5-12. It’s disappointing.
Lock into the NFL Draft
It is evident that the oddsmakers believe the Lions have a significant amount of progress to make in order to be considered competitive. The initial phase of their latest reconstruction will commence with the NFL Draft, scheduled to commence on April 29.
Due to the abundance of highly coveted quarterbacks expected to be drafted early, the Lions, holding the seventh pick, have the opportunity to trade back and accumulate more picks in the upcoming draft or for future selections. This aligns with the Lions’ intention of acquiring a top-tier receiver following Kenny Golladay’s departure. As the original No. 7 spot may not be ideal for securing a receiver, exploring a trade becomes a viable option for the team.
