Can you please rephrase that?

As Detroit casinos eagerly anticipate their reopening, two renowned casino companies have announced a safety requirement on Wednesday that will have a significant impact on the local gaming market.

Caesars Entertainment has made it mandatory for all individuals to wear masks within its casinos, with the exception of when customers are eating or drinking.

MGM Resorts International promptly implemented a mask mandate soon after.

Starting from Wednesday afternoon, Caesars has implemented a new requirement that applies to all of its US brands and those operating in Ontario. In a similar vein, MGM has also made an announcement regarding its US properties, notably including MGM Grand Detroit, which happens to be Michigan’s most bustling casino.

Similar to its counterparts in Detroit, Caesars Windsor has not yet disclosed its reopening date, spanning across the Detroit River.

Caesars takes a bold step, MGM follows

Before the announcement, only Caesars employees and guests at table games were obligated to wear masks, while others were not.

Tony Rodio, the CEO of Caesars Entertainment, stated that individuals who choose not to wear a mask will be instructed to depart from the premises.

We made a commitment to constantly assess the most up-to-date recommendations, directives, and medical research related to the COVID-19 public health crisis. Based on solid scientific evidence, it is highly recommended that we prioritize the use of masks and maintain social distancing measures as crucial preventive measures against the transmission of COVID-19 between individuals. As a result, Caesars will adapt and enhance our health and safety protocols accordingly.

When they reopen, the Caesars properties located in Louisiana, Mississippi, Iowa, Missouri, Nevada, Indiana, Arizona, California, and North Carolina will adhere to the new rules. Similarly, the casinos in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Illinois, and Ontario will also be subject to this requirement.

While Greektown Casino-Hotel and MotorCity Casino in Detroit have not implemented mask requirements for their reopening, MGM has taken the lead by imposing this rule.

Casino border war on hold during pandemic

Michigan bettors who are interested in Caesars’ mask requirement are unable to cross the Canadian border at the moment.

The closure of the US-Canadian border for nonessential travel has been extended until July 21, following three previous timeline extensions.

Metro Detroit gamblers have limited options for playing due to the absence of real money casinos and mobile sports betting.

Relief in Detroit is expected to arrive soon, although it may not meet the long-anticipated Fourth of July deadline.

On WWJ-950 AM, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer expressed her resistance towards advancing the state to the next reopening phase, emphasizing that Michigan is not prepared for it at this time.

Detroit casinos will have other safety measures

This month, the Michigan Gaming Control Board enacted minimum guidelines for the reopening of Detroit casinos, which include a requirement to operate at 15% capacity.

Some additional measures include:

  • There are only a few entrance points available, and temperature checks are mandatory.
  • The casino floors are now subject to a ban on smoking.
  • There are no poker rooms available.
  • Enhanced cleaning procedures.
  • Requirements for social distancing.

When will Caesars Windsor reopen?

The Ontario Gaming and Lottery Corporation (OLG) has not yet determined a reopening date for Caesars Windsor.

Caesars has committed to collaborating with the OLG, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, and Unifor Local 444, the union representing the casino. This information was reported by the Windsor Star.

Construction at Caesars Windsor, including renovations and improvements to hotel rooms and restaurants, has been permitted due to the recent easing of restrictions in Canada.

Most Michigan casinos are open

After the coronavirus closures, almost all of Michigan’s 23 tribal casinos have resumed operations.

Next week, two of the three holdovers, namely the Ojibwa Casinos in the Upper Peninsula, are set to open. The Baraga location is planned to open on Monday, while the Marquette location will follow on Wednesday.

In Brimley, the Kings Club Casino has also closed down; however, the Bay Mills Indian Community has reopened the Bay Mills Resort & Casino, which is located nearby in the same town.

According to social media posts, Kings Club is currently closed and there is no specified date for its reopening.
