After a closure of almost three months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, both Bay Mills Casino in Brimley and all five Kewadin Casinos have resumed operations and welcomed visitors once again.
By Monday, a total of 20 Michigan casinos had reopened, including the recent reopening of the three Four Winds Casinos in the southwest region.
As of Friday, nine casinos in Michigan, including the commercial ones in Detroit, had not yet resumed operations. Greektown Casino-Hotel, MGM Grand Detroit, and MotorCity Casino are currently awaiting an announcement from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer regarding their reopening date.
As of Friday, the COVID-19 Tracker on the American Gaming Association’s website indicates that there are presently 621 open casinos nationwide, while 368 remain closed.
Bay Mills, Kewadin have restrictions upon opening
Bay Mills recently announced a partnership with DraftKings Sportsbook, resulting in temporary changes at the establishment.
At all times, customers are obligated to maintain a distance of two machines. Table games are not available, and the operating hours for the initial week are from 10 a.m. to midnight.
The Kewadin locations in Christmas, Hessel, Manistique, Sault Ste. Marie, and St. Ignace do not have table games available.
As per the casino’s regulations, plexiglass barriers have been installed between team members and guests when feasible.
Which Michigan casinos are open?
Despite Bay Mills Casino reopening at 10 a.m. today, its counterpart located 2 miles away in Brimley remains closed.
Kings Club Casino, one of the three Upper Peninsula casinos, remains closed as the Bay Mills Indian Community has yet to announce a reopening date.
Upper Peninsula casinos
There are currently eight operational casinos in the Upper Peninsula.
- Today marks the reopening of Bay Mills Casino in Brimley.
- The Island Resort and Casino in Harris, Michigan was the earliest casino in the state to resume operations on May 16, despite initially planning for a May 6 reopening. Visitors can enjoy round-the-clock access to slot machines.
- On Friday, all five Kewadin Casinos were opened.
- As of May 22, Northern Waters Casino Resort in Watersmeet has officially reopened. Visitors can now enjoy the casino and bar until 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
Lower Peninsula casinos
The Lower Peninsula casinos are currently open for business.
- FireKeepers Casino in Battle Creek reopened on June 1st with new safety measures in place. Visitors can now check the website for slot occupancy totals, which indicate the availability of games. The higher the percentage, the fewer games are open for play. However, it’s important to note that as occupancy nears 80%, entrances to the casino may be temporarily closed for safety reasons.
- Dowagiac, Hartford, and New Buffalo are three of the locations where Four Winds Casinos will be reopening at noon on June 15. Additionally, the South Bend, IN, location will also resume operations on the same day.
- Gun Lake Casino in Wayland reopened on June 8th. As of Friday, the casino has returned to operating 24/7. The table games are available from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m., while the poker room remains closed. For information on slot occupancy, you can check here.
- Leelanau Sands Casino in Peshawbestown has resumed operations since May 29th, welcoming the return of table games, Bingo, and Thursday Senior Slot Tournaments.
- The reopening of Little River Casino Resort in Manistee took place on May 29. It is important to note that individuals must be 18 years of age or older to gain entry into the entire establishment, not solely limited to the casino floor.
- According to the Petoskey News-Review, the Odawa Casinos have been actively involved in community initiatives. The Mackinaw City location commenced operations on May 22, while the Petoskey location, which opened on May 29, recently organized a drive-through COVID-19 testing event. Over 550 local residents availed themselves of the free testing service.
- The Saganing Eagles Landing Casino and Hotel in Standish reopened to the general public on June 1. Additionally, the RV park is also open for visitors.
- The Soaring Eagle Casino Resort in Mount Pleasant reopened to the public on June 1. Instead of transferring tickets to rescheduled shows, the casino is offering refunds for their concerts.
- As of May 29, Turtle Creek Casino in Williamsburg has reopened, and reservations for the hotel are now available.
Which Michigan casinos are closed?
There are three LP casinos that remain closed.
- Greektown Casino-Hotel in Detroit is currently anticipating an announcement from the governor’s office regarding the date of their reopening.
- MGM Grand Detroit is currently awaiting an announcement from the governor’s office regarding the date of its reopening.
- MotorCity Casino in Detroit is currently awaiting an update from the governor’s office regarding its reopening date.
Three casinos in UP are currently closed.
- According to a Facebook message from the Bay Mills account, the Kings Club Casino in Brimley will remain closed until further notice.
- The reopening dates for Ojibwa Casinos in Baraga and Marquette are yet to be determined.
When will Detroit’s casinos reopen?
While much of Michigan’s economy is gradually reopening, Governor Whitmer has yet to announce a reopening date for Detroit’s casinos.
On June 8, Whitmer gave permission for bars and restaurants to resume operations with a maximum occupancy of 50%. Additionally, salons and barbershops across the state will be allowed to reopen starting this Monday.
On June 8, the Michigan Gaming Control Board released reopening guidelines for the Detroit casinos, awaiting the governor’s approval. These guidelines encompass a 15% capacity limit, prohibition of smoking on the casino floor, and the temporary closure of poker rooms.
Michigan Governor Whitmer expressed her desire to transition the state to the following stage of reopening before Independence Day.
