The path towards legalized sports betting in Michigan has resembled a square dance in its progress.

Casino executives and tribal administrations in Lansing, MI were actively engaging with various entities to secure sportsbook operators and acquire sports betting technologies amidst the legislative shuffle undertaken by politicians.

According to Bruce Dall, the president of MotorCity Casino, there was an abundance of interested parties prior to the recent opening of the sportsbook at the Detroit facility.

Last month, Dall mentioned that a year ago, during our presence at ICE London, we received a total of 22 partnership offers. This was shared by Dall during the unveiling of MotorCity’s FanDuel Sportsbook.

However, it is clear that FanDuel has experienced great success in New Jersey from the very beginning. Collaborating with this brand has been extremely beneficial for us.

MotorCity, a sports betting facility spanning nearly 9,000 square feet and owned by Detroit billionaire Marian Ilitch, was constructed with a budget of slightly over $3 million. Its opening coincided with the global shutdown of sports leagues due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Similar to MotorCity partnering with FanDuel, casinos statewide are optimistic that their negotiated agreements will place them in a favorable position to thrive upon the return of sports.

Barstool, BetMGM hit Motown

Greektown Casino-Hotel and MGM Grand Detroit, the other two casinos in Detroit, did not face any local decisions regarding their partnerships.

In January, Greektown, which is owned by Penn National Gaming, revealed a collaboration with Barstool Sports centered around sports betting. The partnership primarily emphasizes the branding of the sportsbook.

During the opening of the sportsbook last month, John Drake, general manager of Greektown, confirmed that while the current location is not Barstool-branded, the upcoming permanent one will be when it opens later this year.

Greektown has chosen Kambi as its technology partner, a company based in the UK.

On March 11, the new sportsbook of MGM Grand Detroit was revealed, following the same branding as other MGM properties like The Mirage, Bellagio, and Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, located across town.

The BetMGM opening in Detroit was attended by representatives from Roar Digital, an operator jointly owned by MGM and GVC.

Starting things off on a positive note, Matt Prevost, the CMO of Roar, acknowledged the efforts made by MGM Grand Detroit representatives at the local level.

Prevost said that the property has established a strong rapport with the local community and regulators, which has greatly facilitated the smooth transition of going live in Michigan.

Across the Lower Peninsula

In addition to Detroit, numerous partnerships have been established among the 12 remaining casinos in the Lower Peninsula.

Turtle Creek and Leelanau Sands, two casinos in northwest Michigan under the management of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, have formed a partnership with William Hill.

Scientific Games has been chosen as the technology partner for FireKeepers Casino in Battle Creek, as they plan to establish their online casino and sports betting app closely associated with their property.

Parx Casino, owned by Greenwood Racing Inc. based in Pennsylvania, has joined forces with Gun Lake Casino in Wayland to handle their sportsbook operations and online gaming platform.

In January, The Stars Group revealed a collaboration with the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, enabling the tribe to utilize the Fox Bet app for online betting at their Odawa casinos located in Petoskey and Mackinaw City.

In an email sent to Playinmichigan on Wednesday, Mike Bean, the CEO of Soaring Eagle located in Mount Pleasant, expressed his reluctance to disclose any details regarding their upcoming technology or branding partnership plans for their three casinos.

No announcements have been made regarding the sports betting plans of Little River Casino in Manistee and Four Winds Casino, which has three locations in southwest Michigan.

Over the Mackinac Bridge

Several of the 11 casinos in the Upper Peninsula have recently disclosed their partnerships.

In January, the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians became one of the pioneering entities in the state by publicly announcing their partnership with PointsBet. This collaboration aims to offer mobile sports wagering and online gaming services to their community.

In January, the tribe revealed that it had entered into exclusive negotiations with PointsBet for the management of its retail sportsbook located at the Northern Waters Casino Resort in Watersmeet, which is close to the Wisconsin border.

GAN has teamed up with Kewadin Casinos, which operates five locations in the U.P., to offer retail sports betting and online casinos.

One of the most significant developments in Michigan pertains to the casino operator that has yet to form a partnership.

In an email response to Playinmichigan on Wednesday, Stephen Miraglia, the Communications Director for DraftKings, stated that the company currently has no announcements to make.
