David Kaye of Mason has found a genuine side hustle within his side hustle by providing a live stream of his online poker games.
The individual from Michigan has developed their expertise in poker and their personality profile to generate additional income, alongside their full-time job in the data sector during weekdays.
The opening of regulated Michigan online poker on January 29 has played a significant role in bringing about these positive changes.
In a video interview with Playinmichigan, he mentioned that despite not being the first place that comes to mind regarding big-name poker, Michigan boasts a substantial poker community. He expressed excitement about the chance to play on a state-regulated site with a large player pool.
From high school home games to WSOP
Just like numerous residents of Michigan, Kaye got into the habit of participating in $5 poker games with friends when the annual World Series of Poker live events gained popularity on ESPN during the past summers.
While Kaye was pursuing her college education at Trine University in Indiana, she maintained her passion for live poker by participating in home games and visiting casinos in Michigan, even after graduating from Haslett High School.
Gradually improving his skills, he eventually reached the point where he participated in the 2014 WSOP in Las Vegas, showcasing his talent in a live setting.
Kaye emerged victorious in a tournament held at FireKeepers Casino in Battle Creek in 2016, bagging a total of $15,923 in winnings. Furthermore, his fortunes continued to rise as he scored an impressive $16,000 from a bad-beat jackpot at a casino in 2017.
With ample free time during the pandemic, Kaye made the decision to elevate his poker skills to a higher level.
Kaye: ‘Community feel’ of online poker more interactive than live
In July 2020, Kaye commenced live streaming his online gameplay, gradually leading up to the introduction of regulated online poker.
Following multiple delays, PokerStars Michigan finally launched on January 29th. Shortly after, BetMGM Poker also made its debut. Kaye, who actively plays on both platforms, expressed their intention to join WSOP.com MI once it becomes available.
During the initial release, Kaye’s viewer count remained consistently below 8.
Currently, Kaye consistently maintains an audience of over 100 viewers on Twitch streams. On average, around 1,500 viewers tune in at some point during a 3-hour stream. It is worth noting that content creators on these platforms generate income.
“I find great pleasure in the sense of community. I longed for it dearly in the live poker environment,” he expressed. “Discovering a group of individuals with whom I can discuss hands or share my playing journey has truly enhanced the interactive nature of online poker beyond what I had previously experienced in live settings.”
Kaye, a prominent personality in online poker streaming, expressed his joy in “raiding” smaller twitch streams using his substantial fanbase. Streamers in Pennsylvania and Michigan have been collaborating to expand their viewership, and this mutually beneficial practice should persist even when Michigan becomes a part of interstate poker compacts. The Michigan Gaming Control Board has confirmed that the compacting process is currently underway and expected to be completed in 2021.
Regulation brings confidence, larger player pools to Michigan online poker
Kaye attributed the significant growth of his online poker live stream following to the immense popularity of regulated poker.
Kaye stated that in a regulated market, individuals have a higher level of trust in their financial investments. They perceive the activities as secure and officially approved, assuring a smooth functioning, which ultimately attracts a significant number of participants.
In my opinion, the regulation of gambling during the COVID-19 pandemic, when numerous casinos were forced to close, created a strong desire among many individuals to engage in play.
Kaye’s online poker live stream goes to thousands online nearly 20 hours a week
Kaye has physically partitioned his home office into separate workspaces for his day job and side job. Currently, he dedicates approximately 15 to 18 hours per week to his side job, streaming all of it on Twitch. Subsequently, he compiles condensed versions of these sessions to create highlight videos for YouTube.
Occasionally, he dissects televised hands or compiles 8-10 minute videos showcasing his own gameplay sessions. Certain videos delve deeply into analyzing intriguing hands.
With over 3,000 followers on Twitch and nearly 4,000 subscribers on YouTube, the 29-year-old has amassed a significant online following.
Just to clarify, Kaye’s streams are on a 5-minute delay, so please refrain from attempting to locate him at a table and watch his streams in real time. “Many people inquire about that,” Kaye remarked, alleviating my embarrassment for asking.
Every Monday, you can find Kaye’s weekly streaming schedule on Twitter (@DavidKayePoker).
Kaye has managed to capitalize on his global viewership to generate additional income and finance his endeavors.
“After the video interview, Kaye expressed that streaming and poker, along with other games, are emerging as the next big thing in entertainment. He believes that content creation and streaming are still at the early stages of development, presenting ample opportunities for individuals. With the resurgence of the US online poker market and the convergence of content creation with gaming, the potential for growth is immense.”
