While I acknowledge that Stafford is not solely to blame, it is evident that the Lions franchise faces numerous challenges. Nevertheless, Stafford’s contract was undeniably an obstacle in their quest to steer the team in the right direction.
Franchises can swiftly turn their fortunes around by discovering a capable young quarterback under the existing NFL rookie pay scale, which was implemented following Stafford’s draft.
Joe Burrow led the Cincinnati Bengals to the Super Bowl within two years. Similarly, the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams have also made it to the Super Bowl in recent times with a rookie-contract quarterback.
By making minimal commitments to such a crucial position, those teams were able to allocate their resources to other areas. This enabled them to acquire valuable playmakers on both offense and defense.
Rodgers to keep tormenting us
Green Bay persists and remains a force to be reckoned with.
For decades, the Packers have consistently posed a significant challenge to teams in the NFC Central/North division. With the recently signed 4-year deal for Rodgers, it is highly probable that this trend will persist.
The potential departure of Rodgers from the NFC North could have presented a golden opportunity for Detroit, especially considering Chicago’s rebuilding phase and Minnesota’s possible direction towards it.
The Lions have a significant amount of work ahead, but the absence of Rodgers in the division could potentially speed up the process.

The reason behind Detroit’s impact is the sudden rise of Aidan Hutchinson, a defensive end from Michigan, who has now become the leading contender to be chosen as the top pick in the NFL Draft.

After the 2022 season, Detroit will have more flexibility to invest in free agents.
It is evident that the Lions are in dire need of assistance. The crucial aspect lies in allocating resources to various positions that require attention. The duration of a rookie contract, typically spanning 4 to 5 years, presents an ideal timeframe to revamp the entire franchise.
The upcoming 2025 Draft appears to offer more promising quarterback prospects compared to the current 2022 class. Leading the pack are Bryce Young from Alabama and C.J. Stroud from Ohio State, who are anticipated to be the most sought-after QB talents.
While it’s not guaranteed to acquire a capable rookie QB, if the Lions manage to do so, I anticipate a positive turnaround in Detroit.
After enduring years of suffering, it is undoubtedly challenging to request Lions fans to remain patient. Nevertheless, I firmly believe that opting to wait for one more year to initiate a complete turnaround is the most advantageous choice.
