On Saturday, the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown, will be held.

Many online sports bettors from Michigan, including myself, will be embarking on their second horse racing betting experience.

I’m currently exploring three methods to utilize my $10 in TVG site credit for betting on the upcoming race this weekend.

Please note that the following suggestions are not expert advice. In fact, they are merely provided as options for you to consider if you choose to participate in the weekend’s activities.

TVG Michigan Preakness Stakes Promo Offer

I didn’t win any of the bets I placed on the Kentucky Derby. Although I could attribute it to the winner not being in the field when I made those bets, I refuse to do so. The blame lies solely on me for placing those bets before the field was confirmed.

Regardless, I am grateful for TVG’s sign-up offer as it allowed me to get my initial $10 win bet refunded in the form of $10 site credit.

The TVG offer, which is still available for the Preakness, can be availed by new customers.

To get started, simply click on the button provided and sign up for an account using the promo code RISKFREE. After successfully registering, make a deposit and proceed to place your first bet on a single horse in any race at any track, with a maximum amount of $200. If luck isn’t on your side and you don’t win, don’t worry! You’ll receive your wagering credit back within 24 hours.

The promotion will only consider the winnings from a win portion of a win/place, win/show or win/place/show wager.

Just a quick reminder, horse racing markets are not offered at any of the 15 online sportsbooks in Michigan. However, Michigan bettors can still access the largest online operator, TVG, as well as TwinSpires and Xpressbet.

Michigan racetracks, including the last remaining one, Northville Downs, legally allow betting on horse racing. To attend the Preakness, you can make a reservation by calling 248-349-1000, as Northville Downs is situated at 301 S. Center St. in Northville.

Placing a Win bet on the Preakness Stakes

The most straightforward option for my spare $10 is to place it on the person/team I think will emerge victorious.

As I stated in my previous article about the Kentucky Derby, I must clarify that I am far from being an expert on horse racing. However, it has become quite evident that there is a widespread expectation for Epicenter to emerge victorious in this race.

At the time of the Derby, Epicenter was the top choice and is now predicted to be a significant favorite in the upcoming Preakness, with morning odds set at 6-5. If these odds remain unchanged, placing a $10 bet on Epicenter to win would result in a payout of $22, including a $12 profit in addition to my original $10 wager.

Although it may be mundane, doubling your money is always a favorable outcome. However, it cannot be compared to the profitability of placing $10 on the underdog Fenwick and winning $500. Naturally, after witnessing Rich Strike’s unexpected victory in the Derby, individuals will likely feel enticed to take that risk.

To maximize your bet or avoid any last-minute surprises, it’s crucial to keep an eye on the odds movement before placing your bet, regardless of the horse you choose to support.

Placing a Superfecta Box bet on the Preakness

There are four leading contenders in this race: Epicenter, Early Voting (7-2), Secret Oath (9-2), and Simplification (6-1). These are the only horses with odds below ten on the morning line.

You have the option to place a $10 Superfecta bet on the oddsmakers’ favored order, which could result in a rewarding payout if you agree with their predictions.

However, if you’re looking for a smaller payout with a more secure option, you can consider boxing the four of them. This means that you will win as long as they finish in the top four, regardless of their order.

To achieve this, you will be placing a $0.40 bet for a cumulative amount of $9.60. This is due to the fact that there are 24 potential winning results, and you are paying $0.40 for each outcome.

Usually, I prefer to include an additional horse in the selection to increase my chances of winning or to take a risk. However, this would result in 120 possible winning outcomes, which is not feasible with a budget of $10, even with a minimum bet of $0.10.

Placing a Win/Place bet on the Preakness Stakes

Alright, imagine you have a strong desire to bet on the underdog, but you’re feeling apprehensive about Epicenter and his incredible speed in a race that is shorter than the Kentucky Derby.

By placing a win/place bet, you essentially make two separate bets on a single horse. For instance, if you wager $5 on Fenwick to win/place, your total cost would be $10. However, you will emerge victorious if Fenwick secures either the first or second position.

In the event that your horse emerges victorious in the win/place bet, you shall emerge triumphant in both wagers. In the unfortunate scenario where it secures second place, the “win” portion will be forfeited, yet you shall still prevail in the “place” portion.

The payout for that is not as high as a straight-up win bet on the horse, as your win bet is reduced by half. However, it still provides you with an opportunity to bet on an underdog and a slight chance to stay in the game.
