The Upper Peninsula will witness the reopening of another Michigan casino on Friday morning.
Northern Waters Casino Resort in Watersmeet made an announcement on Tuesday, just a day after Governor Gretchen Whitmer revealed her intentions to reopen a significant portion of Northern Michigan during the upcoming weekend.
During this holiday weekend, the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians facility, located near the Wisconsin border, will be joining the Island Resort and Casino in Harris as the sole Michigan casino out of the total of 26 to accept bets.
Following the closure of all Michigan casinos due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Island Resort and Casino emerged as the first establishment to reopen its doors on a Saturday.

Michigan officials, tribes were at odds
Whitmer’s attorney general rejected Island Resort and Casino’s initial reopening proposal.
Earlier this month, a letter was issued by the office of Dana Nessel, warning customers and employees of potential “civil and criminal penalties” if they proceeded with the proposed reopening.
Last week, Rep. Beau LaFave, a Republican who represents the Island Resort district, took the initiative to draft a resolution that aims to reaffirm the sovereignty of tribal nations.
As Whitmer, a Democrat, faces a lawsuit from the opposing party challenging her executive powers, it is noteworthy that Michigan Republicans currently maintain a majority in both congressional chambers.
Last week, state tribal leaders, Whitmer, and other state officials convened a meeting to discuss the casino matter.
Gov. Whitmer reopening much of state this weekend
On Monday, Whitmer made an announcement stating that several businesses, such as bars and restaurants, can reopen in the U.P. and Northern Michigan on Friday, with a maximum capacity of 50%.
Out of the 23 tribal casinos in the state, 11 are located in the U.P. Additionally, there are five other casinos in the Traverse City Region, which will also be partially reopening on Friday.
In Michigan, the Memorial Day weekend marks the customary commencement of the summer season. This is especially true for numerous residents who choose to unveil their seasonal homes nestled in the northern region of the state.
Due to the governor’s extended Stay Home order for a significant portion of the state, Detroit’s three commercial casinos will remain closed until at least May 28.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the American Gaming Association reported that 91 casinos across the country were open, while 898 remained closed.
