“When can we expect the return of major sports leagues in the US, now that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused their play to come to a halt?”

The NBA suspended its season more than two months ago, with officials making the call on March 11. Soon after, most major sports also halted their activities. However, as June approaches, there appears to be a possible comeback on the horizon for the country’s leading organizations.

MLB owners, players at odds

Major League Baseball appears to be at the forefront of preparations for a comeback, as it involves the least amount of player-to-player contact among all sports.

The proposal for a July start, which has been approved by owners, encompasses 82 games, a universal designated hitter (DH), 30-man active rosters, and a 14-team postseason. Under this plan, teams would compete in their respective home stadiums. Nevertheless, the major hurdle lies in the suggested 50/50 revenue sharing arrangement between players and owners.

In March, both the players’ union and owners reached an agreement regarding prorated salaries for the condensed 2020 season. Despite this, MLBPA executive director Tony Clark remains steadfast in his stance that players will not engage in further negotiations regarding their salaries subsequent to the March agreement.

Regarding safety, the upcoming concern revolves around a 67-page proposal that has been delivered to the players’ association. This comprehensive document outlines safety protocols for the 2020 season, emphasizing rigorous testing and prohibiting actions such as high-fives, hugs, and spitting. Additionally, the proposal suggests implementing social distancing measures within locker rooms and discouraging players from using the stadium showers.

NBA opening facilities

On May 8, the Portland Trail Blazers and Cleveland Cavaliers were the initial NBA teams to resume operations at their practice facilities. Following suit, the Utah Jazz, Orlando Magic, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers, and Los Angeles Lakers have also reopened their facilities. As social distancing measures are gradually eased in their respective states, it is anticipated that additional teams will follow suit and open their practice facilities as well.

The NBA has implemented regulations.

The facility allows a maximum of four players concurrently, who are required to wear masks except during their workout sessions. Workouts are restricted to a duration of 90 minutes, and upon arrival, each player’s temperature is checked. Nonplayers must always wear masks and gloves, adhere to social distancing measures, and frequently sanitize equipment.

The NBA has yet to finalize any plans for resuming actual games. According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN, the league is deferring its decision on scheduling until early- to mid-June, pending approval from health officials.

NFL holding firm with 2020 plans

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk asserts that the NFL remains confident in hosting a complete 2020 season, even in light of the current sports hiatus.

According to Florio, individuals familiar with the NFL’s discussions have revealed that the possibility of not having a 2020 season is very unlikely. The primary concern currently revolves around the testing capacity and efficiency for players and staff. However, the league maintains a positive outlook, believing that sufficient testing will be accessible by the start of training camps in August.

The NFL is optimistic about fans being able to attend games and is currently prioritizing the safety of teams and the occurrence of games.

Reasons for optimism

There has been a glimmer of hope for sports fans in recent weeks, as live events have been successfully organized by the UFC, NASCAR, and international soccer.

In Jacksonville, FL, the UFC organized a series of three events within an eight-day span, providing an intriguing prospect for sports bettors. Although there was an initial setback when Ronaldo Souza and two of his cornermen tested positive for COVID-19 just before his fight on May 9, no further problems were reported during the course of these three events. The MMA organization diligently enforced stringent distancing and testing protocols for both fighters and production crew members.

The upcoming UFC event is set to take place on May 30th in Jacksonville. UFC President Dana White has expressed his desire to organize a pay-per-view event, UFC 250, in Las Vegas on June 6th.

After a hiatus since March 8, NASCAR made a comeback to live racing on Sunday with The Real Heroes 400 at Darlington Raceway in Darlington, SC. With no spectators in the grandstand, drivers and teams followed safety protocols to ensure a safe event.

The Toyota 500 at Darlington will take place on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., marking the continuation of racing in NASCAR. A modified season schedule has been implemented, featuring four races scheduled to run between May 20 and May 31.

Last weekend, international soccer made a comeback as the Bundesliga resumed play in Germany on Saturday. Additionally, the Premier League soccer resumed training on Tuesday, aiming to resume gameplay by June 12.
