Amidst a golf realm in chaos, the focus now shifts to another significant championship this week.
For the first time since the recent launch of the LIV Tour, the upcoming 2022 U.S. Open Championship will witness the integration of both PGA Tour members and LIV Tour members.
Despite Tiger Woods being unable to play due to physical reasons, the third major of 2022 offers several intriguing storylines for MI sports bettors to contemplate.

Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas favorites entering the week
Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas emerge as the top contenders to claim victory this week as we kick off the week.
McIlroy emerged as the victor in the battle for the RBC Canadian Open title on Sunday, after both players fiercely competed for it.
After securing the victory, McIlroy has climbed to the third position in the global rankings. Remarkably, he has achieved top 10 finishes in four out of his last five tournaments. Notably, McIlroy has earned the prestigious title of four-time major champion, notably winning the 2011 U.S. Open.
Thomas, who currently holds the fifth position in the world rankings, recently achieved an astonishing victory in the PGA Championship just last month. This remarkable triumph marked his second major title.
Scottie Scheffler, the current top-ranked player globally, is regarded as one of the frontrunners. With an impressive record of four victories in 2022, including The Masters, Scheffler has showcased his exceptional skills. Nevertheless, his recent performance at the PGA Championship resulted in him failing to make the cut.
Jon Rahm, who emerged as the champion last year, is currently in contention. The world rankings place Rahm in the second position. His victory in the PGA tournament last year marked his inaugural major triumph. However, Rahm’s performance in the two majors held in 2022 has seen him fall outside the top 25.
LIV golfers in the field
The inaugural LIV Golf Tour took place in London over the weekend, marking its successful debut. Although the PGA has enforced a suspension of LIV players from their tour, major tournaments have yet to follow suit with a similar decision.
Among the notable individuals in that group are Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Louis Oosthuizen, Patrick Reed, Sergio Garcia, and Phil Mickelson.
LIV poses a potential danger to the PGA as it benefits from substantial financial support from the Saudi government. In its inaugural tournament, Charl Schwartzel, the individual and team champion, amassed a staggering prize of almost $4.5 million. This amount exceeds over twice the reward for winning the U.S. Open in 2021.
No Tiger Woods this week
Tiger Woods participated in the first two majors of 2022, but he will be taking a break this week.
Woods, who is still in the process of recovering from his car accident in February 2021, believes it is necessary to give his body the rest it requires.
In a tweet, Woods stated that he had already informed the USGA about his decision to skip the U.S. Open due to the need for more time to strengthen his body for important golf tournaments. However, he expressed his hope and intention to participate in the JP McManus Pro-Am event in Ireland and The Open next month. Woods shared his excitement about returning to the game soon.
Woods successfully qualified for both the 2022 Masters and PGA Championship. At Augusta, he secured a 47th place finish, but unfortunately had to withdraw from the PGA Championship after the third round due to leg discomfort.
Piot, Stuard represent Michigan
This week, there are two notable individuals from the state of Michigan in the field.
James Piot, who will be participating in the 2021 U.S. Amateur Championship, unfortunately did not qualify for The Masters and has been unable to make the cut in all five PGA events he has competed in this year.
Last week in London, the Farmington Hills local chose to participate in the LIV Tour and managed to secure a tied 25th position, earning a noteworthy $166,000. However, for the upcoming U.S. Open, Piot is considered a significant underdog with odds of +40000 according to oddsmakers.
Brian Stuard, hailing from Michigan like many others in the field, is participating in his seventh U.S. Open. Despite being a native of Jackson, he has only managed to make the cut once.
Stuard has had a disappointing performance in 2022, missing nine out of 18 cuts and managing to secure a top 10 finish in only two tournaments. As a result, oddsmakers are not favoring him to win.
