The green light is about to be given for the reopening of Detroit’s three commercial casinos.

On Wednesday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued an executive order enabling the reopening to take place on August 5th.

Due to the pandemic, Greektown Casino-Hotel, MGM Grand Detroit, and MotorCity Casino have remained closed since March 16.

Before the Fourth of July, Whitmer had talked about the possibility of reopening the gambling halls, but due to the worsening COVID-19 numbers in Michigan, that plan had to be reconsidered.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Whitmer stated in a news release that with the ongoing increase in COVID-19 cases, it is crucial for Michiganders to remain vigilant and not let our guard down.

In light of an increase in cases linked to social gatherings throughout the state, it is necessary to impose additional restrictions on gatherings to safeguard the well-being of our community and economy. Implementing these stringent measures will enhance our ability to safely return our children to schools and prevent the potential havoc of a second wave.

Detroit casinos will face restrictions

Whitmer has approved a 15% capacity for the Detroit casinos, aligning with the reopening guidelines issued by the Michigan Gaming Control Board. However, this capacity is noticeably lower than that set by other states, where limits range from 25% to 50%.

Additional limitations as a component of those guidelines encompassed:

  • There are only a few entrances available, and individuals will undergo temperature screenings.
  • Smoking is prohibited on the casino floors.
  • There are no poker rooms available.
  • Enhanced cleaning protocols.
  • Requirements for social distancing.

Hotel reservations starting from August 1 are now being accepted by two of Detroit’s casinos.

After the commencement of sports betting across the state on March 11, all three casinos had no choice but to shut their doors merely five days later. On the same evening, Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert’s positive coronavirus test result emerged, leading to the subsequent suspension of activities within the sports industry.

Michigan tribal casinos reopened weeks ago

After the closure of all 23 tribal casinos in Michigan, with time, all but one have resumed operations.

The Kings Club Casino has a sibling casino located approximately two miles away in Brimley.

In addition, Whitmer’s executive order will impose stricter measures in northern Michigan, including limitations on group sizes and indoor bars.

Detroit missing big-time revenue each day

The casinos in Detroit, serving as a crucial economic driver, contribute approximately 15-20% to the city’s budget. It was estimated that the city was losing nearly $600,000 per day due to their closures.

Detroit casino revenue was nearly 60% lower in June compared to the previous year.

After experiencing a decline in mid-June, Michigan is currently witnessing an average of approximately 600 new coronavirus cases per day. However, the daily death counts remain significantly lower compared to the devastating numbers recorded in March and April, when the virus heavily impacted the Detroit area.

Following the closure of Detroit casinos, three tribal casinos throughout the state have recently introduced retail sportsbooks.
