The reopening of Ohio casinos could potentially happen on June 19, but the specifics are still uncertain and subject to change.
In a recent tweet, OH Gov. Mike DeWine announced that the state’s casinos and racinos will be allowed to reopen in two weeks.
Coming up soon: In exactly two weeks, the doors of casinos, racinos, amusement parks, and water parks will finally unlock. Moreover, we have recently received and reviewed the safety plans for the Memorial Golf Tournament scheduled to take place from July 13th to 19th. We are pleased to announce that the plan has been approved.
On June 5, 2020, Governor Mike DeWine tweeted as follows: “@GovMikeDeWine”
Ohio casinos reopening plans
Gaming facilities in Ohio must adhere to protocols set by DeWine’s office and the Ohio Department of Health.
After the implementation of “Responsible RestartOhio,” state offices have issued a sector fact sheet specifically for casinos and racinos.
Additional guidelines may be applicable to different establishments within gaming facilities, such as bars, restaurants, and salons.
While carrying out their job responsibilities, employees are obligated to adhere to a social distance of six feet. In cases where maintaining this distance is unfeasible, the provision necessitates the installation of physical barriers between employees. Additionally, the guidelines stipulate that employees must wear face masks and that hand sanitizer stations must be made available in areas with high foot traffic.
While face masks are not mandatory under the order, it strongly advises customers to wear them. Additionally, businesses are obligated by the state to limit occupancy to 50% of the fire code capacity and stagger guest entry.
In addition, hand sanitizer will be made available to customers. Adhering to health guidelines, casinos must ensure that no more than three players are seated at a table simultaneously. Furthermore, slot machines will be rearranged to maintain adequate distancing measures.
As of now, the Ohio Casino Control Commission has not provided any additional guidance. Nevertheless, there is a possibility that this may change within the next two weeks. If not, casino and racino operators will have to rely on their own strategies and decisions.
As of now, specific reopening dates for individual OH casinos or racinos have not been announced. Additionally, it remains uncertain whether a two-week duration is adequate for these establishments to implement necessary safety measures and comply with operational guidelines.
In states such as Michigan, casinos have implemented mandatory face mask policies and temperature screenings for their customers. In the coming two weeks, each gaming facility operator will determine whether to adopt these measures.
Enthusiasm for gaming survives the shutdown
Despite the implementation of enhanced health and safety protocols, gamblers in various regions of the country have not refrained from visiting casinos. A notable instance is observed in Mississippi, where one casino experienced a significant influx of visitors during the Memorial Day weekend.
If the casinos and racinos in Ohio experience comparable success, it could potentially have a positive impact on the three commercial casinos in Detroit. Currently, there is no set date for their reopening.
If Ohio achieves success, it might influence Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to grant them clearance earlier rather than later. Nevertheless, this decision could potentially be influenced by the progress of other businesses within Michigan.
Mark your calendars, Ohioans! Regardless of the outcome in MI, casinos in Ohio have set a target date. If you’re eager to indulge in some gambling, make sure to circle June 19.
