This week marks the occurrence of the second major championship in the 2022 golf season.
The PGA Championship will take place at Southern Hills Country Club from Thursday to Sunday.
This week’s field will feature numerous notable players, including Tiger Woods, but the spotlight will primarily be on Scottie Scheffler, who emerged victorious in The Masters back in April.
Can Michigan sports bettors sustain their support for Scheffler amidst his impressive winning streak?

Rahm, Scheffler PGA Championship favorites
As the weekend approaches, Scheffler and Jon Rahm emerge as the top choices for bettors.
The majority of people place these two as the favorites in the PGA Championship betting market, with Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, and Colin Morikawa also considered as strong contenders.
Scheffler, who currently holds the top spot in world rankings, is experiencing an incredible streak. Having emerged victorious in four out of his past seven tournaments, including the prestigious Masters, he is undeniably on an exceptional run.
Scheffler had notched his inaugural major championship win, although he had achieved top 10 finishes in his past two PGA Championship appearances. In 2020, he secured fourth place, while in 2021, he claimed the eighth spot.
Scheffler has showcased remarkable performances in major championships. Throughout his most recent seven tournaments, he has consistently placed 19th or higher in each one. In addition, he has achieved an impressive five top-10 finishes and secured a well-deserved victory.
Rahm currently holds the second position in the global rankings, with Scheffler leading the pack. Recently, he secured a victory at the Mexico Open, marking his first win in the year 2022.
In his career, the Spaniard has won one major championship, which took place in 2021 at the U.S. Open. Additionally, he secured the eighth position in the 2021 PGA Championship. However, his recent performance at The Masters, where he finished in 27th place, ended a streak of four consecutive top 10 finishes in major tournaments.
Tiger Woods teeing it up in PGA Championship
Despite still recovering from his rollover accident a year ago, Tiger Woods aims to secure his 16th major championship victory this weekend.
Despite not being listed as one of the favorites to win the Wanamaker Trophy, Tiger Woods emerged victorious the last time the PGA Championship was held at Southern Hills in 2007.
Despite being a long shot, Woods is still attracting a significant number of bets from across the country.
According to Jason Scott, VP of Trading for BetMGM, Tiger Woods (+6600) poses the highest risk for the sportsbook to win the PGA Championship. If Tiger manages to win, it would result in the largest loss in BetMGM history. Conversely, if Tiger fails to make the cut, it would be a favorable outcome for the sportsbook.
Last month, Woods made his return to The Masters, securing the 47th position overall, despite a two-year absence from PGA events. Currently holding the 818th rank globally, Woods has an impressive record of winning the PGA Championship four times throughout his career. Additionally, he achieved a remarkable second-place finish in the tournament in 2018.
Defending champ Phil Mickelson not competing
Defending champion Phil Mickelson will not be in the field, whereas Tiger will be.
Mickelson, who had a remarkable major win that will be remembered for years, is now absent from the tour just a year later.
By defeating the field in the PGA Championship by two shots, Mickelson made history as the oldest major champion at the age of 50.
Lefty secured his sixth major championship in his career, with the PGA Championship marking his second triumph in this tournament.
However, within a span of only 12 months, Mickelson’s reputation in the golf industry has taken a hit as he is now viewed as a pariah due to his contentious remarks regarding the Saudi-backed Super Golf League.
When discussing Greg Norman’s rival league, Mickelson was quoted by Alan Shipnuck in an excerpt from his unauthorized biography as follows:
According to Mickelson, Shipnuck attributes the following statement: “Considering their involvement in Khashoggi’s murder and their appalling human rights record, including the execution of individuals based on their sexual orientation, it’s difficult to understand why I would even contemplate it. However, this presents a unique chance to redefine the functioning of the PGA Tour, which is why I am considering it.”
Following Mickelson’s announcement of his golf hiatus, he refrained from participating in The Masters and subsequently withdrew from the major event scheduled for this week. Notably, his most recent tournament was the Saudi International, which took place on February 6th.
Ryan Brehm representing Michigan
This weekend, there is only one representative from the state of Michigan.
Ryan Brehm, a resident of Mount Pleasant and a graduate of Michigan State University, will be participating in the PGA Championship.
Brehm secured his place in the major tournament by emerging victorious in the Puerto Rico Open earlier this year, marking his inaugural PGA Tour triumph. This achievement propelled him to the 286th position in the global rankings.
Brehm is considered a highly unlikely contender for victory this weekend. Oddsmakers have assigned him a very low chance of claiming the Wanamaker trophy.
Brehm is about to participate in his second major championship, following his previous appearance in the 2017 U.S. Open, where he secured a 53rd place finish.
