Next month, the public will have an opportunity to express their opinions regarding the upcoming launch of internet gambling in Michigan.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board has set a date for a public hearing on Sept. 23 in order to facilitate the rule-making process for online sports betting and online casino gaming.

The virtual hearing, set for 1 p.m., is expected to last three hours. It will occur after two NFL regular-season weekends have passed. Realistically, the launch cannot be expected until approximately half of the 2020 season is completed.

Meeting puts launch at around Thanksgiving

As part of the rulemaking process, a collection of preliminary rules was released in July.

The regulations incorporated aspects from various other states, including Indiana, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, where online gambling is already operational.

The state’s rulemaking process stipulates that there is an approximate 40-day duration following the public hearing for the agency to deliver a final report to the Joint Committee of Administrative Rules.

The certificate of adoption typically takes around 25 days to process.

The launch would align perfectly with Thanksgiving, the most prominent day on the Detroit Lions schedule, as the combined estimate of 65 days indicates.

Nevertheless, stakeholders and legislators have contended that certain steps can be accomplished more expeditiously than the projected time frames.

Michigan still planning on fall online gambling launch

In Michigan, the public hearing marks a significant milestone in the rulemaking procedure for online gambling, encompassing internet sports betting, online casinos, and online poker.

According to Playinmichigan’s report, there could be a potential obstacle connected to the FBI.

In a recent update, the MGCB Executive Director, Richard Kalm, informed the board that the FBI was currently not receiving fingerprints from them for federal background checks.

Playinmichigan contacted the MGCB this week and anticipates receiving an update shortly.

The projected launch dates are either in October or November, according to the most recent estimates.

In December, Governor Gretchen Whitmer officially approved the expanded gambling bills, which subsequently led to the launch of retail sports betting in March.

Michigan has a total of 15 casino operators, and it is anticipated that each one will establish their own online sports betting brand. Notable industry giants like BetMGM, DraftKings, and FanDuel, as well as prominent tribal casinos, are among those planning to develop their unique product offerings.
