Todd Estes talks Michigan WSOP bracelet win

Todd Estes’ perspective on poker underwent a drastic transformation as a result of a decision made almost a month ago, despite his initial indecisiveness.

Estes hesitated for a moment, contemplating whether he should take part in a Michigan World Series of Poker Online Bracelet event. After a brief pause, he nonchalantly shrugged his shoulders and casually remarked, “Sure, why not?”

The shrug from Milford’s 46-year-old mechanical engineer was not something he regretted.

Afterwards, Estes emerged victorious in the No-Limit Hold’em Ultra Deepstack competition, securing not only his maiden WSOP bracelet but also a substantial prize of more than $27,000.

The hesitant decision made by Estes not only resulted in one positive outcome but also opened the door for potential future benefits for recreational Michigan online poker players.

Todd Estes on winning a World Series of Poker bracelet

Estes has been engaged in the game of poker since the early 90s, driven by a desire to attain a WSOP bracelet that had the potential to drastically change his life.

Estes made the decision to enter the second WSOP Online Bracelet event in Michigan, putting down $400, on Sunday, June 12.

Estes explained that the allure of the bracelet event was what ultimately motivated him to participate. The prospect of potentially winning a bracelet was highly enticing to him. Additionally, the fact that he only had to outperform a few hundred individuals made the competition feel attainable and plausible.

Estes’ instincts were proven right as he dominated the field, consistently leading in chip counts throughout the tournament. By the time he reached the final table, Estes held over twice the amount of chips compared to his nearest competitor.

Estes admitted to feeling a strong sense of nervousness, not because he was afraid of the other players, but rather because he feared making mistakes. Throughout the event, he maintained a significant advantage in chips, which he managed to hold onto even as the number of players dwindled to approximately 25. As he reached the final table, Estes grappled with determining the appropriate level of aggression to employ. He was determined to strike the perfect balance and avoid any missteps.

Getting his WSOP bracelet, and more

Estes was contacted by WSOP regarding the arrangement of representatives to deliver his bracelet after his victory.

Unbeknownst to him, a camera crew, accompanied by ESPN and renowned WSOP commentator Norman Chad, would soon be making an unexpected visit to his doorstep.

Chad’s journey to Milford and his act of giving Estes his bracelet were both captured by WSOP.

In addition to the jewelry, Chad extended an invitation to Estes for an all-expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas. The purpose of the trip was to partake in the WSOP Tournament of Champions scheduled for July 18, and also to participate in a $1,000 Super Turbo No-Limit Hold’em event on July 17.

“It has been an incredibly exhilarating experience. Winning that tournament alone was satisfying enough. But then, unexpectedly, Norman Chad shows up at my doorstep, and that was absolutely mind-blowing. And as if that wasn’t enough, besides receiving my well-deserved bracelet, they generously offered to cover my expenses and fly me to Vegas for yet another tournament. The excitement just continued to escalate, exceeding all expectations.”

Because Estes’ schedule did not match their offer, WSOP arranged for him to be flown to Vegas to participate in the $3,000 Freezeout No-Limit Hold’em event on June 30.

Estes performed admirably, successfully advancing beyond the initial stage. However, his hopes of winning a cash prize were dashed by a mere nine positions, as his pair of jacks were defeated by a pair of aces.

Estes explained that winning a mere five thousand dollars wouldn’t have a significant impact on his life. However, the opportunity to win six hundred thousand dollars could truly change everything for him. With this in mind, he decided to take a risk and approach the game with an aggressive strategy, ready to fight until the end. Sadly, his plan didn’t go as expected, as he encountered a formidable opponent.

During his trip to Las Vegas, he also had a special presentation of his bracelet.

WSOP Tournament of Champions still a go

Estes plans to travel to Las Vegas on his own to participate in the highly anticipated Tournament of Champions. This prestigious event gathers all the victorious bracelet holders from this year’s World Series of Poker.

In contrast to his prior occurrence in Las Vegas, the TOC is set to be brimming with an exceptional lineup of top-notch poker players, including the victor of the Main Event.

Estes remains unfazed by that, as he possesses unwavering confidence in his abilities. His recent victory and impressive performance in the $3K Freezeout only bolstered his belief in himself.

Estes chuckled as he shared his perspective, “I can honestly say that I didn’t feel overwhelmed at all. I mean, there were quite a few players there who were not that great, to put it kindly. It’s just that some individuals with money happened to be among those not-so-skilled players. Of course, there were also some skilled players present, but as soon as I sat down at the table, I could easily spot a few players making really poor choices right from the start.”

New life in Estes’ poker dreams

In 2006, Estes participated in a WSOP Main Event, but the outcome was far from satisfying for him. Overwhelmed and unable to make any significant impact, his experience proved to be less than ideal.

After this victory, Estes expresses a reignited passion to chase after the Main Event.

Fortunately, his wife has become slightly more sympathetic towards his aspirations of pursuing poker.

Estes expressed that although his wife is generally supportive of his poker playing, the thought of him being away for a week solely for the purpose of playing poker seemed somewhat challenging. However, her perspective changed after his recent victory, and she became completely supportive. In fact, she will be accompanying him for the TOC. Estes revealed that his future plan is to participate in the Main Event next year.

Although obtaining another WSOP bracelet serves as a motivation, the prize money from the Main Event also holds significant appeal.

Estes expressed, “Although winning another bracelet would be fantastic, simply securing life-changing money in the main event would suffice for me. Just three weeks ago, I never anticipated owning a World Series bracelet. Now that circumstances have transformed, I find myself wondering, what other accomplishments can I achieve here?”

Immediate future of a WSOP bracelet winner

Estes frequently faces the question regarding his bracelet – what are his plans for it?

Although my friends have suggested that I wear it whenever I play cards or engage in similar activities, I find it a bit strange. Wearing it simply doesn’t provide the comfort I desire.

Estes implied that he might choose to enclose the bracelet with either the victorious playing cards from the ultimate hand or a photograph featuring himself and Chad.

Estes intends to maintain his status as an active online poker player for the time being.

The upcoming launch of interstate poker play in Michigan could provide him with valuable opportunities to enhance his skills by competing against players from across the nation.

Estes expressed his ambivalence towards interstate play, stating, “I have mixed feelings about it at the moment. I appreciate the manageable size of player pools in Michigan, as it allows for a more controlled environment. However, if we were to include interstate play, these pools could potentially triple or quadruple in size, which could make winning or achieving monetary success a bit more intimidating. Nonetheless, it’s important to note that the prizes would also increase, which is definitely a positive aspect. I believe that skilled players will ultimately find their way through the initial challenges that arise from interstate play.”
